Looking for ideas regarding volunteering in Chicago.
Does anyone have any ideas?

I want something non-political preferably close to home on the north side. One or two nights a week? I do financial/mortgage sales for a living but I would prefer something more hands-on and task oriented.

I might try habitat for humanity this spring but i don't know anyone who is involved in that program. I love doing construction type work and have a truck.

Any ideas?

1. off the top of my head-
http://www.inspirationcorp.org/programs/cafe/cafe.html
is a really good homeless support org. in uptown

i know someone who is a counselor for these guys. i do not know how much they use volunteers. they do some real nitty gritty work.

these guys work in my neighborhood, if they do not need you, they would be able to tell you who in the area would need your help.

i know that habitat has done work in this area, but i know that they had some real problems applying their model in the city.
and, of course, the folks in your alderman's office could certainly point you to folks in need. especially in the 49th. joe moore is a good grassroots guy.

5. Thank you Mopinko ! Also, I have to switch my pups food...
and we just purchased a 25 pound bag of the old stuff. My boyfriend was going to toss it. I will run by there to see if they need the food and maybe some help.

6. they do do more cats and especially bunnies.
but i think they have a resident dog, and help people rehome dogs. i'm sure they could use a bag of food.
i try to give my time and money as "low to the ground" as i can. this is a tiny, stretched good group.

7. I looked at the site. What's the deal with all the bunnies?
I know they multiply like rabbits but are people taking them home as pets and then turning them in?

8. yup. and sometimes setting them loose.
bunnies go bad. it is a fact. they are cute, but they chew, they bite, and if they are not neutered, they hump your slippers. and they need vet care, which is some money.
they kind of specialize in rescuing bunnies. they take them in when people find the throw-aways in their gardens. they come in in some sad shaped sometimes.
