"We are still standing"
Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 09:02 AM by Kevin Spidel
One of the best things about working in this campaign is the people. They understand what is at stake. And they are dedicated. Here are the first two things I read in my inbox this morning. One is an article from Lynn Sweet:

Big names back Duckworth, but where's ground support?

<snip>...There is a little more than two weeks to go until the March 21 balloting.

On Saturday morning, Cegelis had quite an organized canvassing operation going on in the Des Plaines headquarters of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

About 150 volunteers were stuffing campaign kits. They had lists of voters all ready, and the volunteers were dispatched to walk precincts.

...

Some of Cegelis' most ardent local and national supporters come from the movements created in the wake of the presidential campaigns of Kucinich and Howard Dean, ironically now part of the establishment as chief of the Democratic National Committee.

At the union hall, I spotted Steve Cobble, who has advised Kucinich, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, when he ran for president, and Carol Moseley Braun, when she made her first run for the Senate from Illinois.

"After the week we just had," Cegelis said, referring to Kerry's golden e-mail appeals for Duckworth, "we are still standing." </snip>

The in addition to this in the paper... ifound this response to a blog on SoapBlox...

Another thing to note -- at the PDA sponsored Cegelis rally we were stuffing bags to be distributed to voters in Elk Grove Township, which is where the rally was held. The bags contained lit pieces from Dan Kotowski (State Senate candidate), Debra Shore (Water Reclamation District candidate), Martha Mills (Cook County Judge candidate), Kent Kirkwood (Elk Grove Township Committeeman candidate), and the IVI-IPO candidate endorsement list. This was not set up by the Cegelis campaign directly, but rather by Greg Sweigert, DFAer and IVI-IPO board member who also happens to be the Elk Grove Township coordinator for the Cegelis campaign. However, it was CEGELIS volunteers who were stuffing those bags with lit supporting several excellent "down ballot" candidates. Christine has always said that her candidacy was about more than just her -- it was about rebuilding the party at all levels. That attitude permeates everything that she and her supporters do. Another reason why Christine Cegelis is a class act all the way!! :-)

i love working on this campaign!

2. YOU don't live in the 6th?
Well. Color me a little surprised.

Seriously. Your passionate diatribes against all things Duckworth led me to honestly believe you lived in the 6th CD.

No need to get defensive -- I don't think it matters a whit. If you believe in someone and want to work for them...well, that's what democracy is all about - and I applaud your passion for bringing about a Democratic majority in Congress (because that IS what this is about, right?).

But after your constant slaps at Duckworth and every single minute point her supporters have made, I really am surprised to find out you're an outsider.

Again - it isn't a big deal, just...a bit surprising.

Oh well. Good luck, and have fun.

3. i live next door. it is my state.
Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 11:26 AM by mopinko
there is no fight in my district. but no, my goal is not a democratic majority at any price. it is the return of my government and my party to the ideals of government of the people, by the people, and for the people. which does seem to be about to perish from the earth.
and i have not ever used the carpet bagger argument, anyway. i have only said that if she is not going to run in her own district, why the 6th. why isn't she challenging judy biggert, or don manzullo? i will tell you, tho, that to the voters who live there, it is an issue.
and where do you live?

4. I didn't attack you.
I said I agreed with your right to canvass, fundraise, raise hell, whatever...wherever you wanted for whatever reasons you wanted.

I just thought you lived in the district.

Breathe in...breathe out.

5. Well, the Illinois 6th struggle now involves ALL Democrats
Thanks to the heavyhanded intervention by the party leadership(in blatant disregard of the tradition that the leadership remains neutral in primary fights)this has become symbolic of the battle for the future of this party. The true question here is, within the Democratic Party, who shall have the say, rank-and-file Democrats or our (often self-appointed)leaders?

Those who back Duckworth(who will of course be worthy of unified Democratic support simply because she's a registered Democrat)want are party to be centralized and, ultimately, undemocratic. They believe that we should shut up and do what we're told. They believe
that we have to settle for crumbs. These are people who have, at a basic level, given up.

Those who back Cegelis believe the Democratic Party needs to be run by ordinary Democrats, and to fight for their hopes and dreams.
Only the Cegelis campaign is based on hope and on confidence in a progressive future.

There are some good people who believe they have no choice but to back Duckworth. To them, I can only say, free yourself from fear.
Join the fight for a Democratic victory from coast to coast. It's not too late.

This is why millions of us from outside the Illinois 6th are now focused on this struggle. It will help decide if we have a living party or a party in name only.
