To all in IL 14th: Who's your candidate for The House?
I Like Laesch.

Have you noticed an unprecedented number of Oberweis Dairy commercials on TV lately, now that Jim Oberweis is the leading Republican candidate out here? Isn't that just a sneaky way to put his name out there?

1. Laesch
He's young and not real "polished" but his heart is in the right place and he's far more experienced in mideastern affairs than you'd expect from a casual meeting. I stopped by his Hq yesterday, got yard signs, put them around at intersections on Butterfield and Rte 59. I live in the easternmost tip of the district - literally a few hundred yards from the boundary w/Roskam's district. I plan to work as much as possible for him - he is the most progressive of the choices. I met his wife, Jennifer, and told my wife that if Michelle Obama is Barack's best asset, then Jen sure is John's! She is bright, enthusiastic, just as nice as can be. She is his campaign manager.

2. please do not put signs on public property.
in most places it is illegal, except for the 48 hours before the polls open and election day. it could bring your candidate a fine. to people who have worked a few campaigns, it also looks kinda pathetic. like you don't have any supporters that will let you put them in their yard.

fwiw, the only candidate that contacted me was stein. i don't live in the district, but did give to christine. he called me himself. twice. i gave him some money.
if i did live out there, i would be inclined to support foster. i have heard that he is not the world's fieriest speaker. but i wish we had more brains in dc.

3. IL-14 candidates
I also got called by Stein. But while I admire his energy, I have problems with some of his stated positions, like the fact that he does not favor cutting the bloated Pentagon budget and that he'd talked (favorably) about the possibility of an attack against Iran. So I didn't give him a donation.

I have personal issues with Laesch, most significantly with his involvement in a bogus challenge against Ruben Zamora's signatures in the primary two years ago. But despite that, he's been the only one in this race to stand up unequivocally for immigrant rights, single-payer, and other things that his opponents won't touch. So if I lived in IL-14, I'd be supporting Laesch.

4. Stein came to my door last weekend.
I live in the 14th, and Stein was canvassing my area. He seems like a nice enough guy, but I'm still going to stand behind Laesch, as I did 2006. What's important, though, is taking that seat out of the hands of the Republik party.
One ray of hope is this: The most viable Republik party candidate is Jim Oberweis, a perennial candidate who is also a perennial loser.

5. I'm fairly new to the district
We moved here from Missouri last spring, and I'm not all that familiar yet with the political scene, other than this is Republican country x( .

I watched the first half of the Republican debate between Oberweis and Lauzen tonite on beaconewsonline.com streaming video. Oberweis is a screaming looney, IMO. Lauzen seemed rather sane in comparison, and from what I gathered from the local blogs, everyone seemed to favor Lauzen. The democratic debate is next week. Currently I'm tentatively favoring Foster, who is a scientist (Fermi Lab) and businessman, but that might change after I see the debate. Not sure if the dems will even have a chance here, but they'll have one more vote from me.

7. I call Oberweiss the "Milk Nazi."
Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 01:25 PM by davsand
He's not just kinda loony, he's absolutely bat shit crazy. I am not in your Congressional district, but I want to assure you that you are correct in your assessment that the man is a mess. Every time he's been on the ballot in Illinois you can pretty much find a hand full of quotes that indicate just HOW NUTS He really is. I know quite a few Republicans that also think he's crazy, BTW. We are, luckily, not alone!

Your district does tend to be pretty conservative, but I do think that with that open seat this time the right Dem can make some inroads. I know John and worked a Congressional campaign with him down here in Tim Johnson land (the 15th) and I do have a lot of respect for John's passion and drive. I can't begin to tell you anything about John currently, but I do carry a soft spot for him based on his history. If nothing else, I know he'll keep that race lively.

Regards from downstate, and belated welcome to Illinois!

Laura

13. The Milk Nazi!
:spray: I like it!

I watched the Dems debate at www.beaconnewsonline.com yesterday, and I liked Foster and Laesch the best. Serra and Stein seemed hypoactive and hyperactive, respectively. Serra's main thrust seemed to be that's he's a moderate democrat, so everyone will like him. Stein claimed he was the only one that Republicans would vote for, 'cuz some told him so. He ended every one of his segments with a rapid shifting back and forth on his feet, which got rather distracting after a while. Laesch seemed to know his stuff and did have a lot of passion, but at this point I'm leaning toward Foster -- not a fiery speaker but damned smart -- it'd be nice to send some brains to D.C. I also liked that he's kept his business operation in the U.S. instead of relocating it to China.

Thanks for the welcome, davsand. :hi:

8. Last night we were driving back to Ogle County
from Chicago.

I was about to get rid of the 780 AM News Radio and listen to some music, when two interviews came on the air. The first one was Lauzen, and the second was the Milk Nazi. I live in the 16th, but we adjoin the 14th. I have lots of Democratic friends there, and I know John Laesch.

Lauzen actually sounded sane and moderate. Of course, that is how anyone would sound, compared to the Milk Nazi. My husband and I concluded that he was making so much sense for a repuke that he had to by lying. That is what they all do, anyway.

If I lived in the 14th, I would be voting for John Laesch. Kos likes Laesch, and dislikes Foster.

16. Foster is ok....I prefer Laesh but foster would be well worth working for
should he win the primary. This is going to be a big money event on both sides. This race is likely going to be touted as a bellwether for the way the nation will vote in Nov. The GOP can not afford to lose so the will pump money in like there is not tomorrow. The DCCC is rumored to ready to jump in the fray with there help. This race may well come down to who works the hardest. If it does we should have the upper hand.

On the GOp side I think the milk nazi will do less well the Lauzen could in grass roots support.

10. John Laesch!!!
Plenty of Laesch signs all around the city of DeKalb (the non-suburban parts of town), with the occasional Oberweis sign here or there.

12. Laesch & Thank FSM for Tivo
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 04:14 PM by Kittycat
The only commercials that we've taken the time to watch are the Obama ones coming through on MSNBC.

I've noticed quite a few Lauzen signs out in the Oswego area. Although many of my neighbors of Dems, compliments of City transplants.

Since you mention Laesch, the campaign called today and are dropping by some yard signs for us. We've already voted, but it will be nice to put his name out there as a reminder that he's running for our neighbors, who vote on Tuesday.

Wish I could have grabbed an Obama sign :(
