Voter registration surges (beacon news)

The 2008 presidential contest is creating palpable excitement that is atypical for a primary election.
Election officials across Illinois are reporting a surge in registrations for the Feb. 5 primary when Illinois joins 22 other states for a Super Tuesday of primaries and caucuses. News coverage of the campaigns and the competitive races in both parties stir people’s interest, officials said this week.
The Feb. 5 primary could help determine whether Illinois Sen. Barack Obama wins the Democratic presidential nomination.
“It’s been very busy,” Rebecca R. Kraemer said of the number of people registering to vote. Kraemer is the Edgar County Clerk and Recorder.
The pace has continued even though the deadline to register expired Jan. 8. Kraemer explained a grace period for registration exists from now through Jan. 22.
