Citizen Action 2008 Annual Report
With the elections well and truly over (for now, anyway), if you're looking for some place to channel all that progressive nervous energy and hope for change, you might want to hook up with one of Citizen Action/Illinois' many projects. I used to work for these guys a couple of decades ago, and have worked with them from time to time ever since. This email just came today:

Greetings!

2008 was another active and productive year for Citizen Action/Illinois and our research and education arm, the Public Action Foundation. The following newsletter briefly reviews some of our major program areas and accomplishments of the past year.

We have big battles ahead of us - health care and economic recovery are just two of our major priorities for early 2009 - and look forward to working with you in our efforts to win lasting, meaningful change for the people of Illinois.

Sincerely,
Citizen Action/Illinois

Fighting for Health Care for America Now

Citizen Action/Illinois has joined 475 local, state and national organizations from across the country to form Health Care for America NOW! (HCAN). HCAN is a national grassroots campaign organizing millions of Americans to win a guarantee of quality, affordable health care for all. We're bringing together people and organizations that believe it's time we had an American solution that provides quality, affordable health care for everyone. 152 House members, 19 Senators, President-elect Obama, Vice President-elect Biden, and Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel have signed on in support of our principles. Protecting Consumers

For nearly ten years, Citizen Action/Illinois has led the Monsignor Egan Campaign for Payday Loan Reform. The Egan Campaign is continuing its work to reform the regulation of short-term loans in Illinois - loans which lock consumers into an insurmountable cycle of debt. In 2008, we partnered with the Woodstock Institute to release a new study of post-Payday Loan Reform Act lending practices in Illinois, entitled "The Illinois Payday Loan Loophole." Learn more . . .

Electing Progressive Leaders

Citizen Action/Illinois was pleased to announce the success of many of our endorsed candidates in the November 2008 General Election. Notable victories were won by State Representative Jehan Gordon (Peoria), U.S. Representative Debbie Halvorson (11th District), U.S. Representative Bill Foster (14th District), and U.S. President-elect Barack Obama. Cleaning up Our Environment

In 2008, Citizen Action/Illinois continued to partner with the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago to lead the Illinois Campaign to Clean up Diesel Pollution, a coalition comprised of over 60 public health, community, labor and environmental organizations working to reduce local health effects from dirty diesel emissions. Last year, we had a number of crucial victories that will mean cleaner air for everyone in Chicagoland. Learn more. . .

Saving Cook County Health Services

Citizen Action/Illinois helped to establish The Emergency Network to Save Cook County Health Services to press for changes to the governance of the county's health care system and to call for a restoration of the system's funding. We won major victories in 2008 - an independent body has been formed to oversee the operations of the Cook County Bureau of Health Services. Learn more. . .
