Crane Bounced From Congress After 35 Years

By MIKE ROBINSON
Associated Press Writer

CHICAGO (AP) -- Rep. Philip M. Crane, the longest-serving Republican in the House, suffered a career-ending defeat Tuesday at the hands of a well-financed Democrat who ripped the veteran congressman throughout the campaign, asserting that he was out of touch.

"I am ready for retirement because the good Lord knows what he is doing," the 73-year-old Crane told followers as he conceded defeat.

Sensing Crane's vulnerability, Democrats poured big money into last-minute television ads supporting Democrat Melissa Bean, a 42-year-old technology consultant who gave Crane a scare two years ago.

Bean handed out seat cushions that read: "Crane. The Original Seat Warmer. So many years ... so few accomplishments." Crane also was branded a "do-nothing congressman" by Democrats looking to knock off one of the GOP's biggest names in the House.

4. Good! Illinois is a Democratic State and the Rethugs should...
be in the minority on every level.

5. Thanks To All The DUers Who Helped
This is one of my last posts here...time to move along...

Just wanted to say how great it feels to be rid of that drunken corporate shill and here's wishing Melissa Bean the best of luck...we're gonna need it, and to work on supporting her and other Democrats in the changing Suburban landscape.

To the few I've made connections with here, my most sincere thanks for your words and friendship. To the rest, here's wishing all their own inner peace and strength.

9. So Did A Certain Senator From New York...
Until Maine South opened...then she went there...thus I call the schools Hillary East & South...and, of course, it's all located in Hillaryville...all said with the greatest of pride. My cousin was one of Hillary's teachers...went to the White House in '93 for a reunion and brought back some great photos.

But then I'm from Niles West...we kicked Maine East's butt but Maine South beat ours.

Thanks to all the Illinois DU'ers who came out here to help win this seat and now the tough job is going to be holding onto it, as you know Hastert has this high on his radar. But then I'm greedy, I'm ready to work in getting the 6th District next.

Cheers!
