State Journal Register: Gay rights bill a landmark for Illinois (Op-ed)
Edited on Thu Jan-13-05 02:09 PM by Tweed
I'm surprised that the Springfield State-Journal Register wrote such a complimentary and well-written Op-ed on this. This has to grill the "religious"-right in Central Illinois.

"ILLINOIS IS a bit more decent place today thanks to the passage of Senate Bill 3186 on Tuesday.

The bill, which in one form or another has come before the General Assembly almost annually for over a decade, bans discrimination against gays and lesbians in areas such as housing, employment and lending.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who promised he will sign the bill into law, called Tuesday "a landmark day in Illinois."

"This legislation sends a clear message that we will not allow our citizens to be discriminated against," said Blagojevich.

WHILE MANY people deserve credit for championing this legislation, some of special note include sponsors Sen. Carol Ronen, D-Chicago; Rep. Larry McKeon, D-Chicago; and Rick Garcia, executive director of Equality Illinois. Blagojevich also deserves special praise for showing leadership on this measure, as does Senate President Emil Jones, D-Chicago."

No maybe a bunch of people on the Illinois Leader are lurking Democrats, but even they have 78% approval of the bill on their poll:

Does anyone else have good editorals to share on the topic?
