State Journal Register: Grant gets east-side project started

"U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin on Friday visited the Boys and Girls Club of Springfield to talk about $750,000 in federal funds that will help bring a new community center to the city's east side.

The money, from a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development community development fund, was part of a massive spending bill approved by Congress in November. It will be used to select and acquire a site and design the building, Durbin said.

Additional funding will be needed to build the center, most likely from grants and private contributions. Durbin also said he will continue to seek more federal funding for the project.

The goal is to have the facility operational by sometime in 2006, the Springfield Democrat said."

For those of you who don't know, the east side of Springfield is the worst part.
