State Journal Register: State lawmakers see trouble with eye piercings

"Reacting to an apparently growing fashion fad in Europe, an Illinois House panel on Thursday voted to make it a crime to implant jewelry in someone's eye.

Rep. Kevin Joyce, D-Chicago, told members of the House Judiciary Committee on Criminal Law that thousands of Europeans are on a waiting list to have the cosmetic procedure performed.

"I don't think it should ever be done," he said, citing health and safety concerns.

But some lawmakers on the panel questioned the need for Joyce's legislation, House Bill 481. Tattoos and body-piercing are legal, they said.

"Why is it my business where they want to put jewelry?" asked Rep. Connie Howard, D-Chicago."

I agree with Rep. Howard, but I also agree with Rep. Joyce. If you want to do this and be an idiot, go ahead, but at the same time, maybe some people need to be protected from themselves.

2. Photo here (it's not piercing but euww.)
IMHO you shouldn't mess with your eyes unless absolutely necessary. At the least one should make sure that health insurance is in force and covers eye infections.

4. I disagree with this legislation.
I think if someone wants to have something implanted in their eye, it's their right. As long as they sign some sort of waiver that states they, not their insurance and not medicaid or any other public assistance, will be responsible for any and all medical bills in the case of complications.

I can't believe it was a democrat who introduced this legislation.

5. Gross, BUT...
I think it's totally nasty-looking and really frickin' stupid, but it's not the business of the govt. to be regulating it if it's safe...too nanny-state for me.

6. Meanwhile, we still don't have meaningful campaign finance laws,
universal healthcare, a fair educational system, most of our workforce isn't unionized, and a lot of people are out of work. What a waste of freaking time.

7. Let's protect everyone from their own stupidity!
I hear cosmetic trepanation is a big thing someplace--let's all get HOLES drilled in our heads to go with the eye charms. While we are at it, why don't we be sure and practice some REAL self mutilation--maybe some "cosmetic" castrations or clitorectomies...

Am I the only person who is amazed that they think they need to make LAWS about this kind of shit? IMO, this is yet another example of Darwin in action.
