1. I'll be sure to vote it down in Nov.
If it makes it that far. It's as blue as it gets around here and I hope they can see past the bigotry and tell the busy bodies to drop off.

2. Here's hoping they don't get enough signatures.
I'd hate like hell for that to be the main driving force behind turnout in '06.

16. Agree
Why is it that so-called moral people do not understand domestic partnerships of the same gender, who pay taxes and shop at our stores? I guess I don't get it. Bible is not enough information for me and to those who are trinitarians, I'm sorry, but it's a little old.

3. the Illinois "Family" Institute
is nothing but an S/M fantasy world of their leader. They have a hard time getting 100 people to a stupid rally.

People are starting to get suspicious of these "Protect Marriage" initistives, especially when they find out passing them suddenly causes a whole lot of other problems that the voters didn't think about.

5. Given the civil war in the IL GOP they have to do something...
They may see this as the ONLY way to rally the troops. Ain't it a real pisser when the best thing your party can do for GOTV is resort to hate?

You have got to love a party with guys out front like the Milk Nazi, Allen Keyes, Jim Edgar, and miscellaneous Ryans.

8. Weird. There's already a statute stating that marriage is man-woman.
What's the point of stirring up a bunch of fear and misinformation in a petition drive.... oh, I get it. Never mind.

10. Anti-Gay Amendment
As a candidate for U.S. Congress in the 8th District, I will stand up against any anti-gay amendment. Will the Democratic incumbent do the same? No way! Bill Scheurer, http://www.WinWithBill.com">www.WinWithBill.com

12. Wouldn't it be wonderful
if you picked off enough Bean votes to put a Republican back in that seat?

Have fun knowing that you are the GOP's best friend come 2006.

13. Wouldn't it be great if people who want a progressive in office stood
up and voted out the Bush Democrat Melissa Bean and got someone like Bill Scheurer elected? Have you even looked at any of his positions? How much damage are we willing to take just for the sake of having a D after her name? I wouldn't support a Republican that votes like her and I sure as heck ain't voting for a Dem that does.

Bean has already lost a lot of the Dems that did vote for her in my district. I spoke to a few signature gatherers from my precinct and just like me, lots of former supporters are refusing to sign her ballot petition. She's going to lose re-election and rather than waste my vote, I'm supporting someone who supports my values.

15. Bean is the only type of Democrat that can win in our district
This is a district that voted 60% for Bush last year.

Scheurer and other "progressive" third party candidates do nothing except ensure we do not take back the House in 2006.

19. I hope it isn't on the ballot. I expect it to lose if it is.
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 07:57 AM by terrya
IF it gets on the ballot, I'll immediately contact Equality Illinois and volunteer my time to help defeat it. Personally, I don't think there's the same kind of sentiment here to pass such an amendment. But I want to do all I can to make sure it's defeated anyway.

And it would be interesting to get Judy Baar Topinka (who will be the Republican candidate to face Governor Blogojevich in November, IMO) to come out against this amendment...which would piss off a lot of the right wing kooks in her party.

20. If it gets on, I expect it to pass
I can hope it won't, but I expect it will. People will tell me to my face that they respect my rights, but when push comes to shove, they don't want to know, and this is a way to ensure they don't have to acknowledge.

21. That's exactly why she won't do it.
Topinka desperately needs to shore up her conservative credentials right now in order to survive the primary. If she takes any position at all, she would support this measure as a safe way to ingratiate herself to the fundies, while maintaining the (false) appearance of common sense, main street values. Of course, the fundies aren't going to buy anything she's selling anyway, but it might get her more centrist support, because a measure like this would pass in Illinois. Maybe not by much, but it would pass.
