On the eve of his swearing-in as Indiana's 49th governor, Mitch Daniels sought strength in the church where he grew up -- the church where he played youth baseball, and where funeral services were held for his father just five months ago.
Daniels began his two days of inaugural festivities at the 10:30 a.m. worship service at the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church on 34th Street. One of his first official acts this morning: directing a little boy to the church's bathroom. He got hugs, handshakes and words of congratulations from a church family he's known for more than 40 years.
He paused in the McKee Chapel moments before going into the sanctuary, reflecting on his dad's death in August and the history of this 153-year-old church. It's in the McKee Chapel where he usually worships, Daniels said. He said he prefers the 8:15 a.m. service, where Communion is taken. "It's more traditional," he said. Also worshiping this morning were Indiana Supreme Court Justice Brent Dickson, State Sen. Teresa Lubbers, R-Indianapolis and State Rep. Eric Turner, R-Marion.
For the 45-minute service, Daniels sat in the second pew, with his wife, Cheri, and his sister and assistant U.S. Attorney General Deborah Daniels. During the prayer, Pastor R. Byron Crozier asked worshippers to bless the new first family -- and offer prayers for Daniels in his "Herculean task as governor." Crozier asked God to "grant him special gifts for his special work," including strength, intelligence, wisdom and love.
