Kernan's Catholic Alma Mater recinds invite
I have a copy of the full article if anyone is interested. There is a concerted to try to destroy progressive catholic politicos. This is just the start. They also had an blurb on Gov. Granholm's (we are on the state line with Mich) interfaith service for her inauguration questioning her faith.

From Saturday's South Bend Trib:

St. Joe retracts Kernan invitation
Action ordered by Bishop D'Arcy because of governor's pro-choice stance

By MARTIN DeAGOSTINO
Tribune Staff Writer

INDIANAPOLIS -- Gov. Joe Kernan's high school alma mater has withdrawn a commencement speaking invitation to Kernan based on Kernan's policy statements on abortion.

South Bend St. Joseph High School withdrew the invitation at the direction of Bishop John M. D'Arcy of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, who has direct authority over the school.

D'Arcy, who confirmed his actions in conversation and a written statement Friday, said theology teachers at the school believed that Kernan's appearance would directly contradict the moral truths they teach and expect students to embrace.

"I am in full agreement with these teachers," D'Arcy said.

He then directed school Principal Kathleen Ratliff to withdraw the invitation in writing and to inform Kernan that D'Arcy had requested the action.

Kernan's office declined comment except to say that written communications with the school had transpired.

A half-dozen St. Joe students contacted Friday said they had no knowledge of those events.

1. Yes, the Church is impressively suicidal.
And such a moral authority, too.

2. wonder if they would reject Rudi Guiliani were he offering to come
speak to the students. Can't recall where I read this line of thought the other day - but it resonates... that this game playing by the Church per democratic catholic politicians - seems not to be equally applied to prochoice republicans such as Guiliani, Pataki, nor even Tom Ridge.

3. this is bullshit
these Catholics are so short sighted.

They're trying to help the fascists into power. What they forget is that the religious part of the Bush fascism is fundamentalist Christians who see Catholics as a heretical, even satanic sect.

Do they really think that once the theocracy is established that Catholics will remain free to continue their evil ways.

These Catholics learned nothing from the history of persecution of Catholics in this country...

4. Isn't it amazing and
beyond belief that we still have our soldiers fighting and
dying in a country that we were forced to attack in order to
destroy a theocratic government (Taliban). And we still have
some self appointed zealots trying to create a theocracy right
in our midst.

5. Hey Bishop D'Arcy! 501 (c)3 mean anything to you?
Go ahead, issue a missive telling the flock that they're not "good Catholics" if they vote for Kernan....I dare you!
Make history as the first Catholic church to have to fight for it's tax-exempt staus for sticking it's mitre in when it doesn't belong.

Kernan's not some Walmart Pharmicist, he's Governor. Abortion is STILL legal in Indiana. Kernan is charged to uphold the Law, and that means ALL laws, inculding the ones that prevent superstitous bastards like YOU from burning heretics like ME at the stake.

8. Kernan is the Governor for the entire state!
Not for those who share his views!

Remove the tax-exempt status of any religious institution that does this.

I suppose that if Kernan were pro-life, but also supported the carnage in Iraq, he would have been welcomed.

6. I have a great idea
If pro-choice Catholics are so. . ."ahem" TROUBLING to them, then perhaps they should excommunicate every last one of them. Then watch the Parish bank accounts empty with no parishoners left to fill the collection plate. If they want to play politics they should put their money where their pious mouths are.

7. University of St. Francis
Not just South Bend. D'Arcy didn't even have the cajones to show up.

Saint Francis puts spotlight on graduates

http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/journalgazette/8572529.htm

By Rebecca S. Green

The Journal Gazette

Despite the nearly weeklong controversy surrounding the commencement ceremonies at the University of Saint Francis, Saturday's event truly belonged to the graduates.

Although there was the occasional mention of the eleventh-hour decision by university officials to rescind an invitation to scheduled commencement speaker and Fort Wayne-native Dr. Nancy Snyderman, most of the speeches and reflections focused toward the future and away from the events of the past few days.

Snyderman, a surgeon, author and former ABC medical journalist, had been hours away from leaving her California home when university President Sister Elise Kriss sent her a letter by fax, informing Snyderman she would not be the commencement speaker because of her perceived pro-abortion views.

Instead of Snyderman, Rolf Daniel, professor and chair of Saint Francis' psychology and counseling department, gave the commencement address at Memorial Coliseum on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

<snip>

D'Arcy, head of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Roman Catholic Diocese was to have received an honorary degree Saturday but said last week he would not attend the ceremony to avoid being divisive.

D'Arcy had provided information about what he believes is Snyderman's position about abortion - citing reports she had done while working as a medical correspondent for ABC's "Good Morning America," as well as books she had written.

Snyderman has maintained those reports were scientific and not injected with her own personal beliefs about the issue.

During an interview Saturday, Kriss said her decision to uninvite Snyderman was met with mixed reaction but said she had received a lot of support.

9. There are plenty of wonderful churches out there
Kernan should go find one that doesn't suck.
