Clark County Residents help save recycling program
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 05:50 PM by smurfygirl
As some of you may know, The commissioners are trying to do away with the mandatory recycling program in Clark County. One of these commissioners is a democrat. We are disgusted. It all started when a couple of hundred people complained about the yearly fee. Please help us out and write or call the commissioners and let them know you want to keep the mandatory recycling in Clark County.

Commissioner's office number is 812-285-6275
Address is
Rm 306 City County Bldg
501 E court Ave
Jeffersonville, IN 47130

Hurry, time is running out.

Here is my letter I will be sending along with phone calls tomorrow

Commissioner Ralph Guthrie
Rm. 306 City County Bldg.
501 E. Court Ave
Jeffersonville, In. 47130

Dear Commissioner,

Last October we put a red sign in our yard with your name on it. On November 2nd , 2004 we gladly connected the arrow next to your name on our ballots. We knew when you were elected that you would uphold democratic beliefs in your office. But today, we are sad that you have chosen to try and get rid of our beloved recycling program. We used to live in Louisville and before we got engaged we decided to move to the sunny side and join a smaller community in Clarksville. We found an affordable bungalow and were amazed when the county brought us a shiny new recycling bin. We filled that bin till it overflowed and loved the convenience of just being able to sit it at the curb. All those old cans, bottles, and newspapers, going to a new life, perhaps to be a cereal box, or even a piece of plastic that would save someone’s life.
Not only did the county make it so easy to recycle that we gladly did it, they brought us a second bin and a leaflet showing us how to properly sort our items so that the system was more efficient. We gladly accepted the new bin and decided to go one step further by purchasing another bin and three lids. Now we feel that we are making a difference in our community and our environment by this simple act of recycling.

We were happy when we saw all of our neighbors join in too. We watched as the family across the street went from two huge 90 gallons cans a week to a 40 gallon can of trash . We ourselves went from a 50 gallon can to one bag of trash a week, two bags on rare occasions. All of our neighbors have reduced their amount of trash and joined in this program. Not once has anyone around me complained. Then I pick up the Courier-Journal one day and to my dismay I see that there are people complaining about the fees associated with this program. I was stunned. I don’t mind the yearly $34.00 fee. In fact, coming from Louisville it was a bargain. Our yearly recycling bill there was $63.00.

We urge you Commissioner to rethink your approach on this. Clark County should be proud of it’s recycling program. It should serve as a model to other counties. In fact, we believe if people are not participating they should have to pay double the $34.00 fee. That money could be used to buy more landfill that will desperately be needed if people don’t become responsible consumers. Everyone should be recycling. The county has made it entirely easy to do. In fact the laziest person has no excuse to not be recycling. It makes our community better, strengthens our commitment to preserving God’s green earth, and teaches children the importance of ecology and responsibility to their community.

We are in full support of this program and it’s yearly fee, it’s the least we can do to help out in the never ending problem of where to put all that waste. In fact it has encouraged us to try and reduce our waste even more. We now own a compost bin and look forward to the rich soil our leaves, grass clippings, and kitchen waste will bring us.

Sincerely,

xxxxx
