Rokita tosses a bill on the table to require voters to show ID !!

"State lawmakers are considering a bill that would require voters to show a driver's license or another government-issued photo identification before they cast a ballot.

Supporters say asking for proof of identity could prevent voter fraud and give voters more faith in elections, but opponents question whether the legislation could prevent some people from voting.

Secretary of State Todd Rokita, who supports the proposal, said Monday many voters already expect to show a driver's license before they cast a ballot. He said voters may feel the system is flawed when poll workers do not ask to see their identification.

Voters need more confidence when they go to the polls," said Rokita, a Republican.

...The how about giving us somr friggin' honest politicans to vote for and a failsafe, unhackable voting system on which to cast my vote ? That would help MY confidence, immensely !

This, IMO, is a thinly veiled attempt to intimidate nonwhite, low income marginal voters who may not have driver's lisences, or may not feel comfortable - for whatever reason - getting a State Photo ID. And how many people are going to be too nervous to actually go to the polls, thinking they'll be met with 'Hmmm, that name's familiar - isn't there a warrant out for your arrest ?'

Argh. Get me the FUCK out of this state !!!!

3. There's nothing wrong with HAVING photo ID
... but requiring folks to show ID in order to vote is a modernized 'poll tax' -- there's a good portion of the African American, Hispanic and lower income white communities who don't have driver's licenses; and many Hispanics are reticent to get State photo ID because of the horror stories they've heard about INS.

If you're a registered voter, and have your voter reg card - and they can verify your signature at the polling place against the sig they have on file ... that should be enough.

This is just another attempt to keep 'those people' away from the polls because Indianapolis proper is overwhelmingly minority, and tends to vote Dem.

2. Those racists are willing...
to do anything to keep us from voting. We have to stop them now before it becomes harder to later! Where is the party support on this issue? The hateful disallowing of people to vote is a huge issue.

5. And I assume you're a white male with no arrest record ?
Whose never been bullied or intimidated at a polling place, or any place else and aren't nervous about being around 'authority type' figures ??

The problem with voter fraud isn't in the folks who show up to vote, it's in the hacking thats done to the machines once they voters leave.

This is a bait and switch, and an attempt at further intimidation of minority voters.

7. ID will not stop election fraud
As I posted elsewhere, I had to show 2 forms of ID in Baltimore,
1 was a voter registration card and a photo ID, I have voted at the
same place for 10 years and I should not by law had to show anything,
I then went to vote and the machine kept voting for George Bush, I pressed the button 5 times for Kerry and each time Bush lit up and on the 6th try, the Kerry button lit and stayed lit. The voters have to show ID, but the machines don't need a security check, you can't vote if you are a convicted felon but you can write software programs for voting machines.

:wtf:

10. I feel your frustration.
My parents were asked to show ID in our town. People working there do not follow any rules! Some asked some didn't. Some let you wear political t-shirts. some don't. It is all such an absurd circus. We need reform so badly. I like this: "you can't vote if you are a convicted felon but you can write software programs for voting machines." I hope you don't mind if I use it on my Repub family members! :)
