Star report
February 10, 2005

Kyle Hupfer was named director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources today. Gov. Mitch Daniels made the announcement.

"Kyle is a kid of the Indiana soil. He's an avid hunter, has a great love for the outdoors and has a keen business sense," Daniels said in a prepared statement." Kyle is a rising star in his field, and like so many of our new crew, he is making a great sacrifice by interrupting his career in the early stages to join our team."

Hupfer, a Pendleton native, has been a partner at the law firm of Ice Miller in Indianapolis where he concentrated on mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, and general corporate counseling. Hupfer earned his law degree at the Indiana School of Law-Indianapolis in 1998 and his undergraduate degree in business from Manchester College in 1995.

"Growing up as a hunter and outdoorsman in Indiana, I've experienced firsthand many of our state's vast natural resources," Hupfer said in a prepared statement. "Our natural resources, together with Indiana's historical and cultural contributions, represent some of the most significant assets available to us."

1. The obvious first question is ...
What the hell does a lawyer know about running the DNR ?

Shouldn't someone with a background in Environmental Mgmt, a degree in maybe something scientific - biology, ecology, agronomy - have this spot ?

Argh.

2. You would think they had those qualifications
But under Republicans all you need is a talent for selling public lands to the highest bidder and making sure that big-time corporate polluters don't get that precious hoosegow time they so richly deserve.

5. The DNR...
is a joke...I e-mailed them 1 week ago regarding a red tailed hawk in our fenced back yard that was preying on our Min Pin's. The hawk dove at one of our little girls and missed it by inches...all I wanted to know was if the nest in our neighbor's yard could be moved to a nearby State park...they read the e-mail and never responded. I've e-mailed them again...still no response. I believe in endangered animal rights, but this bird should not be allowed to prey on an animal on private property. A state park is 6 miles down the road.
