Indiana: Moment of Silence Bill (Freeper Bill)
The Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence would become everyday school tasks for students under legislation headed to Gov. Mitch Daniels' desk.

And if schools don't have a U.S. flag in every classroom now, they would have until this fall to begin flying the Stars and Stripes.

The efforts intended to bring more reflection and patriotism to Hoosier schools were overwhelmingly approved Monday 86-6 by the Indiana House. They already had been approved by the Senate.

****

The bill allows students to opt out of reciting the pledge, which is already recited at most Indiana elementary schools. During the moment of silence, students must be quiet but can pray, meditate or "engage in any other silent activity."

1. Good compromise in my view.
Might improve class discipline, however, a lot of children will use the "moment of silence" for mischief. That's just the way some children are.

2. Moment of Silence means back door prayer.
Moment of silence = Prayer
Intelligent Design = God

Lets be honest here.

5. Not necessarily.
As long as there aren't any words, the children will do whatever they want. What do you think children do in church when their parents close their eyes for prayers? Whatever they want. The children who are religious will pray. The others want.

6. How would it in any way have an impact
upon classroom behavior and discipline?

That is part of the logic that kills me on this. It makes no sense. Several years ago - in the name of improving classroom discipline - the legislature in LA voted to put, I believe, a copy of the ten commandments in every school. Sure, Johnny with his anger problems stemming from an abusive home will suddenly be transformed for the whole school day because there was a moment of silence... or because he looked up when he walked in the building and saw the ten commandments. It is a sugar pill/placebo coating argument (that makes no real sense).

It would have no impact. Its just feel good, flag waiving, jingoistic American Bullshit, probably what this country is best at.

3. Do I have to bow my head...
for the "Moment of Silence"? & should my lips be moving while my heads bowed? I recite the pledge, went to the Indiana Democratic Club last week & did it. Except when it came to "Under God" I didn't say anything. My "Moment of Silence."

7. Requirement of flag in EVERY classroom is wrong
especially in light of the financial problems schools are having at this time.

A better compromise would be to designate the place of the flag pole in front of the school.
