Lugar needs another letter on the Bolton nomination....
"Lugar Trying to Shut Down Down Biden Investigation of Bolton!" from Daily Kos: <http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/5/4/20852/57883>

It sounds like Senator Lugar has interfered with Senator Biden's request for information from the State Department on John Bolton.

1. Reminder-Call your senator: Bolton Avoided Vietnam Duty
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/5/1/34417/73939

It should surprise none of us to learn that a bully like John Bolton, who has no qualms about chasing and threatening women in Russian hotels, is in fact a wimp and a coward at heart. When our country called, he was the one running for cover.

As pointed out by Slate's Timothy Noah :

John Bolton, Wimp
A Vietnam hawk who remained stateside.

Scratch a saber-rattler, find a war wimp. You can just about set your watch by it, can't you? So it's entirely unsurprising to read the following about John Bolton, Yale '70, in the Yale Daily News:

Though Bolton supported the Vietnam War, he declined to enter combat duty, instead enlisting in the National Guard and attending law school after his 1970 graduation. "I confess I had no desire to die in a Southeast Asian rice paddy," Bolton wrote of his decision in the 25th reunion book. "I considered the war in Vietnam already lost."

And there's this:

________________________

As Steven Colbert notes:

Bolton was born on November 20, 1948.

http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/biog/2976.htm

His Draft Lottery number was #185.

The highest lottery number called for this group was 195; all men assigned that lottery number or any lower number, and who were classified 1-A or 1-A-O (available for military service), were called to report for possible induction. Yet Bolton got in the National Guard??

As the Dan Quayle and Bush have shown, it was really difficult to get into the National Guard, during that time period, because of the long waiting list. Who helped him? Did he have a Rich, Connected parent, like Quayle and Bush did?

http://www.sss.gov/lotter1.htm

As SC notes, somebody with juice had to "pull some strings" to jump Bolton over the long wait list and into the safe harbor of TNG.  And that = breaking the rules.

Moreover, did he complete his 6 year obligation, or did he skip out like bush did, once the war was over?
