Blood tests conducted this week suggest Death Row inmate Gregory Scott Johnson's liver could be used to save the life of his ailing sister, his lawyers said Thursday.

Johnson, scheduled to die by lethal injection at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday for the 1985 murder of Ruby Hutslar, has asked Gov. Mitch Daniels to delay his execution so he can donate his liver to 48-year-old Debra Otis. Johnson's lawyer, Michelle Kraus, said the governor's office ordered the blood tests, but Daniels' spokeswoman, Jane Jankowski, refused to comment.

"Information about Mr. Johnson or his medical records would have to come from him or his attorney," Jankowski said. Indiana State Prison staff on Wednesday drew nine vials of blood from Johnson, Kraus said.

Tests show he and Otis share the same uncommon blood type, B-positive, Kraus said. That's critical, doctors say, because it means Johnson's liver would likely be suitable for donation to Otis.

Johnson's request for a delay, a first for Indiana, has sparked debate about the propriety of harvesting organs from a condemned killer. The issue has drawn national attention; Otis appeared this week in segments of NBC's "Today" show and other news programs.

1. How this is handled will show if we are a country that puts
saving an Innocent life above punishing a guilty.

Killer's request to give liver to sister is denied

By Vic Ryckaert
vic.ryckaert@indystar.com

Gov. Mitch Daniels now holds the only hope for a Death Row inmate who wants to delay his execution so he can donate his liver to his sister.

Gregory Scott Johnson's offer to help Debra Otis held no sway with the Indiana Parole Board, which voted 4-0 Friday against postponing his execution. "Mr. Johnson has acquired enough victims to last a lifetime," board member Valerie Parker said. "How much compassion was shown to Ruby Hutslar?"

Barring action by the governor, Johnson, 40, will die by chemical injection early Wednesday for murdering the 82-year-old Hutslar in her Anderson home. Hutslar was stomped to death and her house set ablaze in 1985.

3. Wonder why teh Schaivo supporters
are not screaming on behalf of the life of the sister? Oh, then it would delay the execution... and they wouldn't want to put off an execution to possibly save a life, now would they?

Just to clarify. I am surprised at her vehemence in her decision.

On edit: Johnson is white.

5. Clearly
We must let two people die instead of letting a convicted murderer get a sentence commuted to life in prison. All part of GITTIN TUF on crime.

8. Shame on you, Mitch!
Indiana thought it was getting a man of God as Governor. Now we can see what a blood-thirsty, non-caring sack of S*&T he really is. Where are the Indiana Repubs in this - and why aren't they protesting this decision? You can't use an embryo to save a life, you can't get a donor organ to save a life -- just what IS it that he is for (besides big business and Lilly)?

10. I agree with everyone else..
"Culture of Life" my ass. Would it really hurt to postpone an execution to save a life? This is just shameful.

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Gregory Scott Johnson was executed by lethal injection at 12:28 a.m. today at the Indiana State Prison for stomping 82-year-old Ruby Hutslar to death in 1985.

Tuesday afternoon, Gov. Mitch Daniels rejected Johnson's plea for time to determine if he could donate part of his liver to his ailing sister.

Later, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Johnson's final appeal.
