1.  The Indianapolis STAR and other local newspapers say Roemer may do it.

Lugar is very strong in Indiana -- one of the safest seats nationwide for the Rethugs.

He's one of the most risk-averse Republicans there is, with only a couple of times where he's provided some needed clarity (both against Reagan -- on apartheid and on Marcos in the Philippines).

Other than that, he's a company man.

Good luck to Tim on this one -- I think he's going to have to invoke divine assistance to knock off Lugar. Roemer's kind of DLC, which is about as liberal as you can be in Indiana before they string you up.

And Indiana may need a Democratic vote in the Senate if Evan Bayh resigns to run for president in 08.

3.  Yes. Lugar is getting a bit slow-moving these days. It's possible
that Tim Roemer could present himself as a kind of new generation Senator. He'd have strong support on the college campuses and in parts of Indianapolis, too.

It could happen.

Hey, Is317 -- welcome to DU!

6. I think he would've said something by now if he wasn't
so he could let the Republican candidates get started campaigning.

5. I'm sure some will say Roemer is a DINO
and I don't particularly like him, but just imagine what kind of candidate that the Indiana GOP will put up if Lugar isn't running...if I were still in Indiana, I'd take Roemer any day.
