I still consider myself an Iowan. I miss the sounds, the locusts and the mourning doves.

11. I know there have been Viesha riots before. Viesha used to be
later in the spring when it was warmer. They moved it to April thinking it would be colder and less likely to erupt into violence. I used to have a great time at Viesha as a kid.

Edited on Mon Apr-19-04 05:14 PM by lunabush
Grain alcohol and school don't mix. Hadn't heard much about previous riots, but I did see note of it in the articles I scanned today. I'd say that tradition is in trouble.

I attended Viesha as a high school kid a few times. It was great - and informative. Thinking about it though, I don't see how it can continue with the riot mentality that goes on these days.

13. reports from IA State Daily, Ames Tribune, and Des Moines Register
on line

We rented a house on Welch from 68 to 72; there's often damage on Welch near Lincoln Way if there's trouble.

The parade and the various indoor and outdoor displays by depts and groups were always fun.

It's a shame a few people can spoil things for many.

27. Went to ISU during the '89 Veisha riots...
Most of the people they ended up arresting were from out of town, but that doesn't excuse the behavior of the students.

29. Hello from rural West Branch (in [relatively] liberal eastern Iowa)
Newly retired from ACT in Iowa City and now a winter Arizona resident. Home now for spring in Iowa. Have been known to write scathing letters to editor(s) and commit other types of rabble rousing. Let's keep up the good fight and keep Iowa on the list of "blue" states come November.

32. I work in IC and live in West Liberty
It's nice to know fellow Iowans are here at DU! I've been lurking for some months, and this is my first post. I'm all giddy! :)

Dems seem pretty enthusiastic around here this year - our caucus in January had 97 people attend (rather than the usual 12-15), including a few disgruntled republican 20-somethings who were mad as hell and not going to take it any more! :)

thx - lori

but a BIG welcome to DU from a fellow eastern Iowa native. Davenporter here. And I heard about the soccer coach out there in West Liberty who pulled his team from the field because of racism. He did the right thing imo. Hope he gets reinstated.
