Iowa City area flood update
Well, they're now predicting the Iowa River to flood at 25% MORE than it did in 1993. In 1993, they released 30,000 cfs at the peak of the flooding. They're predicting 40,000 cfs by early next week. It's expected to crest at 6 feet higher than 1993.

The UI Hospitals has activated their Emergency plan, because of expected transfers from both hospitals in Cedar Rapids, which have lost water and steam.

A police officer told me an alarming thing about the Park Road bridge in Iowa City. Evidently, the bridge is not anchored on the ends (common for bridges), and they're concerned that when the water reaches the bottom of the bridge, there may be air trapped underneath that will lift the bridge and actually move it downstream. Engineers were drilling holes in the bottom of the bridge in the hopes that the air can escape and prevent this. Scary!!

It's planned to close I-80 over the Cedar River in Cedar County tomorrow - this is very rare, I hear.

Stay dry and safe, everyone!

1. The proposed reroute plan fro I80 traffic sounds
like it will cause some real pain to those in the Cedar & Linn county areas.
Going west, traffic will rerouted up Hwy. 38 north to Hwy. 30 (through Tipton). West on 30 to 380. South back to I80. East will go opposite.
I would look for some horrendous problems in Tipton, Stanwood, M'cville, Lisbon and Mt. Vernon.
Also heard that trffic was being stopped from turning onto Hwy. 1 from Hwy. 30 in Mt. Vernon about 1PM. Never heard a reason.
Hope all can stay safe and dry.

2. That's just crazy!
I just read that there is some voluntary evacuation starting in Des Moines now. Any Des Moines DUers got updated info?

We're lucky, both Beaver Creek and the Cedar River have dropped significantly! However this is what the Cedar left of Cedar Wapsie Road:

There will be LOTS of clean-up/rebuilding to be done. As if the tornadoes didn't already guarantee that x(

5. The bridge actually looks okay - but I'd question it's structural soundness -
after all there is a tree lodged underneath it!

8. I have those nightmares
I remember the flood of '65 in Burlington. My parents took us in the car down Highway 99 to see the water. I was only seven. I am not kidding, I still have this nightmare frequently.

9. Kind of off the subject but
did you ever think of the stories and other stuff that our parents do to us when we are young that often scare the beejesus out of us. We could start with fairy tales. Dragons, witches, monsters of all sorts.
When I was young my dad used to 'knock our heads together'. Literally, if two brothers were fighting he would end it by grabbing us and banging our heads together. Damn that hurt like hell. What it taught me was to run when I saw him.
