from the Skinny:
Mr. Q: Is it true that the faculty at the University of Iowa didn’t think Jim Leach was qualified enough to be considered for the presidency at the University of Iowa?
Mr. A: Yes.
Mr. Q: So what is Leach doing now?
Mr. A: Former Congressman Leach, who has an undergraduate degree from Princeton and a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University, and who studied at the London School of Economics, and who was elected to Congress 15 times, and who ran a successful business, and who served as a director of the Federal Reserve Board, and who was a foreign-service officer, just completed a year as interim director of the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and now is returning to the faculty at Princeton.
Mr. Q: And he wasn’t qualified to be considered at Iowa?
Mr. A: That’s what faculty members of the Search Committee believed.
Sheesh - excuse the fuck out of UI for wanting someone with recent hands-on experience in higher ed. So Leach has a BA, an MA, and studied in London - big whoop - that was 35 years ago! Just attending college doesn't automatically make one qualified to run one. Oh, and sorry, but being the interim director of an institute is not nearly as rigorous as being the president of a university.
Hey - he won state wrestling in 1960 - maybe he should become the new UI wrestling coach!
