Somewhat late news: Two Republicans — almost a trend — have told Skinny in recent days that there’s a serious move afoot to get Chuck Larson to run for governor. Larson, 40, is a well-connected lawyer, former legislator, former state party chair, Iraq veteran and current ambassador to Latvia. He’s a phi beta kappa graduate of the University of Iowa, and he earned his law degree, with distinction, at the Iowa law school. He’d be a strong candidate in a general election; the question is: could he beat Steve King or Bill Northey in a primary?. ... More Republican news. End of an era: Republican stalwart Steve Roberts, a Des Moines lawyer considered a moderate, was voted out as national committeeman at the Republican state convention last weekend. Roberts, who has held the post since 1988, lost to Steve Scheffler, president of the Iowa Christian Alliance. And leaving no doubt who controls the party, the delegates elected as national committeewoman Kim Lehman, president of the Iowa Right to Life group. Bob Ray must be turning over in his grave. Oops.
