Surreal.
Has it really been a year? I wasn't in Iowa for the Floods of 93. Moved here from Savannah in 95. Hindsight is 20/10 but I remember friends and co-workers commenting as early as April, how the spring of 08 reminded them of 93. I remember the DAYS much more than the DATES. Hillary had just given her concession speech on Saturday (the 7th of June). But talk was of the rapidly rising Coralville Reservoir and Iowa River. Sunday, the final day of the Arts Fest was cancelled due to thunderstorms. One northbound lane was still open out of Iowa City on Dubuque. Sandbagging had begun in earnest on Saturday, down in Normandy and Idylwild. There was talk of how bad it could get, but it still utterly amazes me. Feel free to post you're memories here of the Flood of 08. The media bombartment has started in all forms of media on the one year anniversary, but that's a good thing. Still plenty of people hurting in Iowa and if it draws attention to their plight than all the better.

1. Still so many daily reminders
The Coralville strip will never be the same. Many businesses have re-opened, but several have not.

2. The Lone Star Steakhouse, Blue.
I'm really surprised it's not coming back. Always heard it was the training center for other Lone Stars. Never had a bad meal there. The service was always good. Bums me out.

4. The Peking House on the Coralville strip
Is it still there? Great place, lots of variety & good value - was a nice treat after going to the U of I Hospitals and Clinics.

5. The place at the corner? Across from the Softball field?
No. They tried. Worked at it for months. Next thing, it's razed. Sorry, Cairycat.

6. To say nothing of the ball fields just east of 1st ave.
Some on the west end of that land have been rebuilt, but the east end (closest to the creek) still looks like a war zone.

3. Down town Muscatine took one on the schnoz
It went mostly unpublicized, but it closed many businesses.
I know Burlington really got nailed also.
Last year I read that it took Grand Forks, ND about 8 years to recover.

In '93 there were little frogs all over. Last year the roads were wiped out.

7. The spillway at the Coralville Rez ran over a year ago, tonight.
It was only a matter of time. I work in CR. A co-worker lives in Palo. He left that Tuesday, June 10. Told to evacuate. We didn't see him again until August. He was one of the lucky ones. Lived a mile from the Cedar. Only lost his basement.
