“This whole journey we’re on involves providing a safe, welcoming and supportive environment for all of our students, and this is really getting to the core of what we’re trying to do with our bullying and harassment policies,” Hamilton said.

According to the GSA Network, a San Francisco, CA-based youth leadership organization, a GSA is a “student-initiated and student-run club in a public or private school. The goal of a GSA is to provide a safe, supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and straight ally youth to meet and discuss sexual orientation and gender identity issues, and to work to create a school environment free of discrimination, harassment and intolerance.”

Driven by the discriminatory language she heard throughout the high school last spring, a couple of months ago, Lala drafted a proposal to begin a GSA at the high school. "
