In hypothetical general election matchups, the poll showed Democrats Mike Blouin, the former state economic development director; and Chet Culver, Iowa's secretary of state, performed better against the two Republican candidates than the other Democrats running in the June 6 primary.

But in hypothetical matchups, support for Blouin and Culver was barely distinguishable from that for GOP candidates Jim Nussle, a Manchester congressman, and Bob Vander Plaats, a Sioux City business consultant.
In a matchup with Nussle, Culver received 43 percent, compared with Nussle's 42.3 percent. Matched with Vander Plaats, Culver received 41.1 percent to the Republican's 42.1 percent.
Blouin got 41.5 percent against Nussle, compared with 41.1 percent for the eight-term congressman. Vander Plaats narrowly edged Blouin in their matchup, 41.1 percent to 40.2 percent. The poll had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
Other Democrats, including state Rep. Ed Fallon, Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge and Sioux City engineer Sal Mohamed, lagged behind the GOP candidates in head-to-head matchups.
