Iowa Newspaper Ad Slams Nussle-Delay Budget Plan to Cut $50 Billion in Services to Children and Families

Full-page ad in Congressman Jim Nussle’s home paper asks why he’s pushing cuts that will harm Iowa’s children.


Washington D.C. – Prompted by the latest Jim Nussle plan to cut even deeper into health, safety and nutrition programs for Iowa children, Vote Kids has launched a hard-hitting ad campaign in House Budget Committee Chairman Nussle’s hometown newspaper.

The ad, which ran on Sunday, informs Iowans that Nussle and indicted former majority leader Tom Delay are pushing Congress to cut billions from programs that help Iowa’s working families, their children, and Iowa’s economy. The ad states, “Cutting smart investments in children is shortsighted. Piling massive debt on their backs is wrong. Doing so in order to pay for more tax giveaways is morally indefensible.”

“Instead of listening to his constituents who have said they want programs that help children and families in their state, Jim Nussle is listening to a discredited Tom Delay and pushing a set of cuts that will harm many of the children and families he is supposed to serve,” said Michael Petit, President of Vote Kids. “It’s time that Congressman Nussle listens to his constituents and protects the services that children and families of Iowa desperately need.”


In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the Republican leadership in Congress is pushing for $50 billion more in cuts to proven programs, such as Medicaid, Food Stamps, Head Start, student loans, child care, and foster care, which already are strained. Congressman Nussle is playing a key role in engineering the cuts.
