Bill Gluba calls Nussle's bluff
Gluba pays Head Start site a visit

The scene Monday at the Head Start site at Grace United Methodist Church in Davenport was familiar: a politician reading to kids.
But if the images were similar to U.S. Rep. Jim Nussle’s appearance a week ago Monday at another Head Start site in Davenport, the message was decidedly different.

Democratic congressional candidate Bill Gluba of Davenport accused the Republican congressman of using some children for a “phony political photo op” even as Nussle sponsored spending cuts that would work against them.

“That’s hypocrisy and people ought to be outraged about it,” said Gluba, who ran against Nussle for Congress in 2004.

<snip>

“Coming into these facilities and using these kids is a form of abuse,” he said.

1. Of course Nussle's people feel differently
In that same article, some woman said that Head Start is not getting cut. All I can say is "yeah right". Good move by Gluba. Expose Nussle for what he is, even though they are running for two different offices. And when is Nussle going to stop ripping everything Vilsack says and does? He's not running against Vilsack, he's running against some others. Good grief Nussle, get it straight!

2. In a round-about way Head Start will get cut - there is only so much
money and so many programs...why cut a successful program.

Nussle's photo op reminds me of his campaigning with his daughter on his shoulder. (right before he divorced his wife and left his kids for a lobbyist who used to work for Newt Gingrich).

He is going after Vilsack because there is a presumption that Vilsack's shadow (Mike Blouin) will be the nominee - I would like to respectfully disagree with that in the hopes that Chet Culver is the nominee - With Vilsack calling the shots in Blouin's campaign and Blouin swooning about how great of a Governor Vilsack has been, Nussle attacking Vilsack equals Nussle attacking Blouin (and don't look too far down the road - Jim Nussle wants to be our President some day). x(

3. Daycare, we don't need no stinkin daycare.
Nuzzle and the whole republican party is about photo-ops. It is more important to let the upper 1% pay no taxes then to let a three or four year olds get a good start on their education. Republicans are about keeping the have nots in their place. If you can't afford to pay for head start then you don't really need head start. After all we can give something else up if we want to send our kids to head start, like food or maybe heat this winter. :sarcasm:

5. Years ago I sat on a panel discussion regarding child care in Iowa
(I was there to speak on child care options for parents of children with special needs)

Bob Brunkhorst (ASSHOLE) (who had his wife stay home to raise their children when they were young) piped up saying "I'm from a small town where the babysitter (yes, cringe here) was the neighbor down the street".

Who needs child care when women should just be staying home with their children where they belong. (did I say ASSHOLE??)

6. That's why we MUST clip his wings NOW!
He has every intention on being President and the Governor's office is just a stepping stone (we all know how hard it is for members of Congress to step into the Presidential ring).

We need to ensure that he not only loses this race, but that the REAL Jim Nussle is exposed to Iowa and to the nation.

It's our moral imperative ;) (I love the movie Real Genius)

7. Yes this is a step to 'President Nussle' & how they cut head start
1) Yep, being gubernator of Iowa is only a step to the WH for Nussle. For the sake of this country we must stop this train here.
2) How to kill Head Start - in a trick the regressives have mastered you turn the funding back to the states under the guise of "local control". Ergo the Feds didn't kill the program, the states chose to spend money in different ways. Nussle says "look, ma, my hands are clean!"
This trick is used to undercut pollution controls and forest management and on and on while claiming it is local folks making these decision. Often this is done with slight changes to regulatory rules, thereby avoiding nasty publicity. Usually these changes are in use and causing problems before anyone even knew things had changed.

15. Karma is really going to clobber
Nussle. The SOB has had it coming for ages. If people could just get a good fact sheet on him and circulate it. It would help. Meantime, cross over and support Vanderplaats in the primary to be make Nussle's path more difficult.

13. You mean a Nussle presidential bid?
The guy's had baggage since 1996 and the ass still got re-elected in 1996/1998/2000/2002/2004 What's to stop him now?

I hope stepping out of his nice safe little district is enough to clobber him, but if he makes it to Terrace Hill, watch out.

14. The baggage was NOT dwelt on
and he has been getting a free pass from the press. This should end when he gets into an area where there are some meaner fighters. This guy is not getting to the White House.

16. I'm not going to fight about whether or not his baggage was dwelt on
It was the topic of about every conversation had about the man since 1996 - I will agree that the press glossed over all of it (especially his staff issues and his relationship w/Mrs. Nussle the second - and why his Dissolution Decree is sealed by Court Order).

This is the first time the man has had a republican challenger and I don't know how dirty Vander Plaats will run - I hope he exposes Nussle for all he is and the press does not ignore it this time. That way we can hammer on him for his bullshit 'I'm a moderate' crap and show him as the Far Right Regressive ass that his really is.

I don't want to see Governor Nussle EVER and NEVER do I want to see him as a presidential candidate - if that happens I just may have to go to caucus as a rep just to support ANYBODY else!

17. I'm going to sneak some money to Vanderplaats
So he CAN fight dirty since that is what Nussle ALWAYS does the last two weeks of any of his campaigns.

8. Bruce Bradley on Daily Kos
Bruce Bradley has a nice post on Daily Kos:

He is showing his progressive side, and he is looking like a strong candidate.

10. I can't
I do not have posting priviledges here. Could you post it? I think it would be good to draw attention to it and have some discussion going over at Daily Kos. It is a good question/answer opportunity that we have with an important Iowa candidate.
