Blouin gets SEIU endorsement
http://www.qctimes.net/articles/2005/12/13/news/state/doc439e6640953e9847216558.txt

This might be a shot in the arm for his campaign.
Fallon has some choice words.
How much do union endorsements matter in a Dem. primary? This is my first go around.

2. You'll support him in a race against Nussel, right?
With Nussel you get the "anti" of both those positions plus thousands more. I can't think of a worse candidate for Iowa than Nussel. It's like the republican party set out to get the most offensive asshole to run that they could find.

4. I won't have to but Nussle is the devil himself
He is not going to be the nominee it will be Culver who is pro death penalty which pisses me off too. I don't think a "civilized society" ought to be killing people to prove that killing people is wrong.

7. I too am bothered by Culver's position on the death
penalty. That said, I'll enthusiastically support him in the general election if he's the man.

I can already sense some bitterness between the Blouin and Culver people. I hope whatever happens we can pull together to defeat the GOP nominee. I fear we'll be divided and stupid.

10. I think it will be okay, we all hate Nussle too much to not vote for the D
Even with my questions about Blouin and Women's reproductive health care rights and stem cell and GLTB and corporate giveaways and....oh GOD!!! I'd still vote for him over F*^cking Nussle.

Just have to ensure that we have a progressive state legislature that keeps Blouin's more conservative leanings in check.

12. The legislature has me excited.
In my district, I've got Rob Hogg running for senate and a nice new guy, Ty Olsen running for house. Art Staed looks like he can raise funds and his old nemesis Jeff Elgin is not seeking re-election (probably because Art ran so close to him last time).

I'd love to have a 51-49 situation just to stick it to the other side for locking dems out of meetings and such.

13. Willard Jenkins is the only rep. left in Black Hawk County
Well, Bob Brunkhorst may cross over the northern part of the County...but HEY neither one of them are running for re-election this cycle!!! I would love for Black Hawk County to be all BLUE (and that includes our new congressman!)

3. Don't know how much weight labor carries these days
I did talk with an SEIU member who is on his local board and he was as Fallon put it "embarassed". Pretty much the reasons stated. He sees Blouin as the man in charge of corporate welfare. While this may bring in some jobs it usually has a heavy cost. He is a Fallon supporter.
Another friend who is quite active in his local is a Blouin man, because of the jobs aspect.
As for me I feel that favoring some companies over others is never good policy. When company A gets tax breaks etc. how should company B, who has been a good citizen for many years, feel? Especially when another state waves some money in their face?

6. It used to be unions only endorsed after a vote from all their members
I don't know how it's done now, but it seems that the labor leaders are voting for endorsements and telling their members how they voted (during the caucuses several union members were pretty pissed at the choices their leaders made for them).

5. This is good for Blouin (who needed some help in this race)
Vilsack is delivering.

After reading the other posts Labor endorsements don't make much sense since Blouin has yet to come clean on Culver's challenge (how many Values Fund jobs are Union jobs? translated, are our tax dollars creating jobs that help Iowans?)

As a Culver supporter, I'd like that answer - the IDED should have that info.

8. Great Question
I am sure that this type of information would be easily attainable for the IDED, and if it were something positive for Blouin my guess would be that we would have that data already.

I will look around online and see if I can scrounge up anything?

9. IDED Web Site
Iowa Department does have a web site and list all the awards since 2002. Without knowing which industries are union or not is not listed. Some I am aware of are union and some are not. There is a lot of reading.

11. Yikes!
Yeah, that is a lot of reading to do. I am SUPPOSED to be working so I will have to sift through it at another time.

Thanks for the link sir!

14. Sarah Swisher is the Political Director of SEIU in Iowa
and also a Vice-Chair of the Iowa Democratic Party (we all know the Chair is Sally Pederson, our Lt. Governor)

This endorsement was obviously a coincidence. :eyes:
