Blouin also clarified his stance on abortion Wednesday with his strongest public statement to date. He pledged to uphold Iowa law, even if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe vs. Wade, the landmark decision that established legal abortions nationally.
"I would not change existing law. I will live with existing law," he said. "And I'm not comfortable with this statement, but it's where I'm at."
Blouin's opposition to abortion has put him at odds with his opponents and a vocal segment of primary-voting Democrats.
Blouin said the position is not flip-flopping because it seeks the same goal as abortion foes: Fewer abortions. Blouin said, if elected, he would try to reach that goal through the promotion of alternatives to abortion.
"I'm convinced that what I've said is clearly in harmony with where my belief system is," he said.
