Candidate views differ on banning Touchplay
http://desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060317/NEWS10/603170364/1001/NEWS

Democrats seeking the nomination for governor expressed differing views Thursday of a ban passed in the Legislature this week on the Iowa Lottery's controversial TouchPlay machines.

Democrat Chet Culver said he would not sign the ban if he were governor, and expressed reservations about its potential impact on small businesses and the state budget.

...

State Rep. Ed Fallon of Des Moines, who is also running for governor, voted Tuesday in favor of the bill to ban the machines. Democratic candidate Mike Blouin said Thursday he would sign the ban. But the former state economic development director also cautioned that the Legislature should act to minimize Iowa's financial liability, which some TouchPlay interests have said could run into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

...

U.S. Rep. Jim Nussle, the presumptive Republican nominee, supports the ban.

Did Mohamed drop?

3. Sorry, Seth - I hope he's saying that because of the financial
position this puts the State in. And not because he's a big gambling buff. I really don't know. I do want to point out that Blouin was not for the ban but now is for the ban....:eyes: At least Culver is once again staying true to his original position (even though it is not a popular one). d.

4. I'm sure...
And it's probably smart politics. Small business owners are up in arms over this (rightly or wrongly) and they have a lot of pull when it comes to getting things done in the state and building an economy.

So far this is Culver's first strike for me (the Death Penalty thing is limited and not an issue for me), so he is doing well. And yes, consistency is important.

Blouin on the other hand keeps coming up empty for me. I can't get behind him for the primary and to be honest, he will have a tough go at inspiring me to do much for him in the general if he makes it there. Culver, Fallon, even Mohammed...I would eagerly support. Blouin? Meh. I would definitely vote for him, but as far as money/time...I'd rather help Loebsack, or someone else I can relate to.

2. KWWL ignored Fallon!
They said Nussle supports the ban and the 'two Democrats in the race' Culver & Blouin had reservations about the ban.

And Fallon????? Mohamed???? Sheesh, great news coverage!

6. Why the ban in the first place?
Maybe I've been missing something -- which is totally possible -- but I fail to see why we needed to ban TouchPlay machines. What was the inherent harm which was presented that led to the need to ban these machines?

7. Well, it seems that minors and gambling addicts
found them just too easy to get to. The machines are often located in convenience and grocery stores to increase revenue. The clerks at said stores cannot police every person who is using them. I have actually witnessed this first hand at a local gas station/convenience store down the street. My opinion is that if they are in bars, where minors are presumably not allowed, it should not be a problem. Not sure if convenience type stores should have them though. As earlier stated, it is just too easy for minors and addicts to get at them.
