Iowa City march - picture
Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 08:57 PM by MaggieSwanson
I attended the march in Iowa City this evening (Monday) to mark the 3rd anniversary of the war in Iraq.

The crowd was estimated at 200, and it was a well-organized event. Dave Loebsack was there, and it is always a delight to speak with him. There were speakers and a musician to start us off, then a march to Jim Leach's office in the Ped mall to deliver a petition, and to a recruiting office to do the same.

Against the organizer's expressed wish for a silent march, the crowd chanted "What do we want? PEACE! When do we want it? NOW!"

Although I felt kind of bad for the organizers of the event, emotions were running too high for many people to stay still.

This picture was taken just after 5pm, while we were listening to the speakers. I apologize for the quality, it's from my camera phone and it doesn't nearly do justice to the size of the crowd.

Peace,

Maggie

- By the way, the large sign in the forefront reads "Billions for the WAR, nothing for the POOR". Great sign.

1. Someday we shall meet, Maggie
I must've been on the other side of the plaza based on the angle of your picture. I usually wear my tshirt that says "george W Bush - worst president ever" with an unflattering pic on the front with a real nice message on the back. I have 4 of them so I always have one ready for a meeting.
Wore one Saturday at Davenport also. Had to wear a sweatshirt under the tshirt today. We left early as my wife felt sick.

5. I think I remember seeing the shirt and you also probably.
If you noticed the person with the peace flag, that was I. Did you hear the speeches anyway? It was so windy I was amazed I could hold on to the flag and my sign but all worked out well. The one TV station I saw gave it some reasonably good coverage.

7. Geez, it was so cold. I was looking for something with SDS on it
Thought you'd have an SDS sign. Mostly we tried to stay warm and avoid the wind.
I spent some time handing out Loebsack stickers. Then ran to my car to get some shirts we'd made for a friend, so I was not really paying the attention I should have. I heard I believe Lori Nelson. She was good.

9. I had two SDS signs but was only holding one. I
I didn't know I'd be carrying the peace flag but some folks with me decided not to go on the march so there I was. The SDS signs had a fist with SDS superimposed. I will keep them and use them on another parade. It was cold and that it why I was wearing my warmest winter parka and a wool hat. I remember cold and breezy IC can be in March. Catch you next time.

12. Yes, I was holding that flag.
It was windy so I kept a tight grip indeed.

18. Thanks I got it working better. Pic showed up.
The NSA is complaining about the illegal code though, whatever that it is. Next I'd better try to get a bigger pic!

22. Thank you!
I wish I had one of you and your signs! A friend of mine was supposed to take pics of the marchers but the faint-heart made himself scarce! And I had my hands full.

The October 28, 1968 sit-in was a success since it caused a good deal of consternation to the U of I administration and the Marine recruiters we were blockading and later actually got into the official histories of IC and U of I! What I can say about thos times now is to recall the phrase (from Wordsworth,I believe): "Bliss was it in those days to be alive/ But to be young was very Heaven."

3. I was there too but missed the other DUers although
I doubt I could have been more obvious since I was carrying the peace flag and the SDS sign. I brought 5 signs and all but one were carried in the march. Since I was the only one with a flag, the organizers had me be at the head of the column. It was well worth being there and I think we got our message across.

8. I talked to you briefly right before the event kicked off
I had brought a big canvas bag full of posterboard signs from Cedar Rapids.

I was woefully underdressed, as my "get off work an hour early" request wasn't granted until late in the day. I didn't have time to change, and I'm sure I looked really silly out in the cold with my skirt and high heels.

I'm pleased to have met you!

10. O you had all of those. That was an excellent contribution
to the peace march. I hope you did not get too cold. It was a chill, strong wind and I thought my flag would blow away! It was good to meet you and I do hope they have another march (and on a warmer day!) KWWL covered the march and did a fairly decent job of it.

4. Damn...
I go to UI (I was back in Council Bluffs for Spring Break up until Saturday) and I never heard about this being in the making. I wish I'd have known -- I'd have attended.

Where'd the protest start -- the Pentacrest?

6. It started in the ped mall in the open area. Hopefully they'll have
more marches and start one at Old Capital when the steps are finally accessible.
