Education, immigration debated by the candidates

<snip>

The first question of the night centered on the controversial No Child Left Behind initiative.

Democratic candidates Bruce Braley of Waterloo, Rick Dickinson of Sabula, Bill Gluba of Davenport and Dennis Heath of Clinton all said that No Child left behind needs serious readjustment.

Asked whether children of illegal immigrants should be allowed in the public schools, Gluba said every child in the country has a right to an education. As for as children of illegal aliens, he added, “They’re in our schools now.”

Heath said he has a problem with 11 million illegal immigrants going to the head of the line over immigrants who entered the country legally. Citizenship must be earned, he said. “Just because you demand citizenship does not mean you deserve it.”
