Animal Liberation Front Claims Responsibility (U of I Vandalism)
Not sure what I think about all of this. IMO, experimenting on helpless animals is cruel and should be banned. But, is this the right way to stop it?

1. Strange!
Some people broke into the new science building at the University of Minnesota in Duluth and wracked up what the news said was $1,000,000.00 in damages. Flooded the place and everything else. Is there something in common?

Domestic terrorists and all.

2. Much like the wingers who don't enlist,
it seems hypocritical to call for a ban on animal research and still accept medical care (including medication), which is built on a foundation of animal research. Hell, even our understanding of nutrition, and things like clean air/water standards are based on animal research.

I'm not trying to flame you, as I'm a vegetarian wearing leather shoes right this minute (I hope you're for banning meat before banning medical research). I know we all have some hypocrisy in our lives. But saying that research should be banned... that seems like trying to force others to comply with your personal level of comfort (much like the anti-stem-cell activists).

Again, I mean no scorch marks in your direction.

3. No offense taken
It's a difficult issue I think for many people. I gave up beef and pork years ago, not just for health reasons, but because of the inhumane treatment they receive, and the damage poor farming practices does to the enviroment. Not to mention the many unanswered questions regarding mad cow disease.
Having pets all my life, I know they are way more intelligent than many people give them credit for. If anyone tried to take my precious kitties and use them in an experiment, they would have to go through me first.

5. wrong way to solve it...
I don't agree with destroying things.
It just makes an ass out of the ones doing it, they only stand out as radicals.
Another thing is, a lot of things have been solved using animal testing, is it morally correct? probably not. But I would much rather a rat take the heat for a new product then me!

6. These were rats and mice
used in psychology experiments. Its not like they were doing medical research on them. This is outright terrorism, especially posting names and address of the researchers. At least the FBI is said to be investigating it, for once.

I also am not throwing flames your way. In the past, testing on animals was often cruel and inhumane, and I know that it needed to be changed. It has since changed, to a great degree. One of the problems with these people (ALF) is that they feel ANYONE who has animals is treating them cruelly. Even your pet cats, according to them, are being held captive in a hostile and unfeeling environment. They resort to flat out terrorist tactics, not caring what they destroy, or who gets hurt in the process-animal lives are more valuable than human.

I was doing a little research on how animals have been used to help in human medicine, so as to have some anecdotal evidence. However, I found that so much medicine has been reliant on animal testing that its easier to just include a link: http://www.rds-online.org.uk/pages/home.asp?i_ToolbarID=8&i_PageID=94

Personally, I try to take a broad view of this subject. My name here comes from the great sounds that my three Siberians make when they're happy, they want to go out, they see a friend (new or old): in short, just about anytime!!! I do love my sled dogs, and yes they ARE smart!!!!
