Republican SOS candidates running on Voter Suppression platform
Edited on Tue May-30-06 10:07 AM by pstans
John Deeth has a good writeup on the Republican candidates for Sec. of State. It seems they are trying to spin their platform of voter suppression into one of ballot integrity. Deeth works in the Johnson Co. Auditor's office, so he has a good perspective of what these guys are talking about.

Check out the John Deeth Blog for more info.

Sec of State: Summary of GOP Badness

In best 1984, War Is Peace Freedom Is Slavery tradition, the two Republican candidates for Secretary of State endorse vote suppression and call it "ballot integrity." Here's how highly they thing of the honesty of Iowans:

"If you open the door even a crack, the cheaters come running through," said Dopf...

It's the airport security, guilty until proven innocent mindset.

# Allison would tighten voting laws by eliminating the use of "third party" couriers to deliver absentee ballots. He also favors requiring voters to show photo IDs...

# Dopf favors shortening the period for casting absentee ballots, as well as instructing people to give a reason why they are unable to go to the polls to vote.

# Allison and Dopf object to Gov. Tom Vilsack's executive order last summer that restored the voting rights of tens of thousands of felons who had completed their sentences.

Perhaps that has something to do with these stats from the Campaign to End Felon Disenfranchisement: an estimated 25% of African American citizens in Iowa have been disenfranchised. That's roughly 11,200 in a state that Bush carried in 2004 by about 10,000.

The fact that African Americans vote nearly 9 to 1 Democratic, as well as simple justice, ought to make repeal and liberalization of felon disenfranchisement laws a priority for progressives. Felony convictions account for two-thirds of the "under registration" of African American males, who are also about one-third of all citizens disenfranchised because of criminal records.

1. Just bat-shit-insane!!
Voting should be the easiest thing citizens can do - it should be accessible to us (in our homes if we choose) and our vote should be counted w/out question (and if questions do arise our vote should be considered a vote until it is proved to be disqualified).

Remember that the SOS is not just the election official for the state but also the office that all corporations run through - large and small. Who will receive preferential treatment I wonder :eyes:

2. The only problem with spreading this information is that
Republicans agree with it. They believe the way to 'protect' our voting rights is to make the process as difficult as possible for as many people as possible. That way only the 'higher-ups' actually get to vote. (Read: Rich white guys)

Republicans HATE our absentee voting system & have wanted it trashed for years now. They hate the absentee ballot couriers -- should have saw the crap they shoveled at me in 2004 when I was a courier. They basically hate anything and everything which makes the process easy for the vast majority of Americans (longer polling place hours, marking on a paper ballot, voting absentee, signing the voter roll to get your ballot, etc.)

Further, these two GOP dudes are running around talking about these issues as if they are going to help 'safeguard' our electoral process. In all honesty the ONLY thing they are interested in doing is safeguarding their own partisan interests at the expense of Iowans.

I know there are issues with Mauro and his ties to the other crap, but we absolutely cannot afford to let a republican become SoS. In my opinion, that is the most important state office we can hold.

3. I was a courier as well...
...but I never had any shit flung my way. There were a couple people here and there who didn't get the system and how meticulous it was (which is intentional -- that way every ballot's integrity is protected), but nothing belligerent.

"# Dopf favors shortening the period for casting absentee ballots, as well as instructing people to give a reason why they are unable to go to the polls to vote."

Why should a reason EVER be provided? That is NONE OF THE GOVERNMENT'S BUSINESS.

4. Mauro's connections?
I am guessing your talking about CIETEC and from everything that I have heard Mauro is not connected at all. The Republicans just want you to think he is.

5. Yes
CIETEC -- I know that most of what's being said is simply a smoke-screen, but the average person doesn't know it. Since we are living in a time when everyone is fed up with corruption, even the slightest belief can be very detrimental to a campaign.

7. One could call that an "interesting perspective"...
I prefer to shorten it up and just call it a lie.

8. Interesting because
In this mailer the GOP was upset about not having a paper trail, the validity of electronic voting machines and encouraging their supporters to vote on a paper absentee ballot.

What a difference a few years makes, eh?

9. Gotta love...
...the fear tactics, like Democrats will try and steal an election from the Republicans. You know, sort of like what Bush did to Gore.
