Tell Me About Vilsack
It looks like Vilsack might be a serious contender for Kerry's VP. I'm sour on Edwards and Gephardt. What should I know about Vilsack?

1. Good man
He's tried hard to work with our Repub legislature but they are mostly dinasours, so he didn't accomplish as much as he might have with a more "user-friendly" legislature. He make a great VP, but I'm concerned that he isn't well enough known throughout the country, although he has made a name for himself in national Democratic circles. No skeletons in his closet.

2. Met him a few months ago
He came to my workplace to present some awards and gave a short speech while he was there, along with a tour of the facility. He seems pretty genuine, I really liked him.

3. Where is he on the spectrum
Moderate? Liberal? Has he expressed any views on Iraq? Would he support single-payer health care. What about guns?

6. Vilsack Speech...
.. I can't find a transcript, but he did address some of these issues in a speech at Georgetown:

http://desmoinesregister.com/news/stories/c4789004/23537551.html

He's been pretty vocal about education lately, and health care for children, at least - I can't say that I could state that he's ever said anything about single payer health care (to my knowledge), or gun control. (Again, off the top of my head.)

He's expressed concern about the War in Iraq, mainly in the Georgetown speech.

Oddly enough, while looking I found a link on Vilsack's approach to dealing with terrorism - the interesting part is that the policy proposal was dated in February of 2001.

4. Good Governor.
But as far as image and mass appeal is concerned I say no way. He can't hold a candle charisma-wise to Edwards or Clark. Even Gep would be better than that. And sadly that's how many vote; with the image.

I'd put Tom V. in a cabinet post. But VP? No way.

7. Zactly...
The GOP kooks in the Iowa legislature here are running amok, we need Tom right where he is. He'd be great in a cabinet post, but we won't give him up unless we absolutely have to.

8. I'm with you
I would hate to give him up, but he would be a great asset to the country in Washington.

9. He gave a speech to the DLC this weekend
Tom Vilsack of IA talked about his successful process for identifying public priorities, eliminating government waste, and balancing his state's budget. As chairman of the Democratic Governors' Association, Vilsack also drew attention to the suggested agenda for governors that appears in the new issue of Blueprint magazine.
