Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack this morning stopped short of backing top New Hampshire Democrats’ position in their battle with national party leaders to keep intact the traditional role of the state’s first-in-the-nation presidential primary.

Vilsack, who is considering a run for President, did not join three other potential candidates of his party in clearly opposing the Democratic National Committee’s rules committee plan to schedule one or two caucuses between Iowa’s leadoff caucus and the primary in 2008.

“My preference would be that we figure out a process that would be acceptable to New Hampshire and Iowa and acceptable to the secretaries of states of those states,” he said.

Two things wrong w/Vilsack's comment (in bold) - 1) Iowa Secretary of State does not set the date for the Caucus - the Party Chairs do (abiding by Iowa Law) & 2) He's the F**king Governor of the State...If he doesn't defend our First in the Nation Status WHO WILL???? (Oh, God, please don't tell me Sally's gonna do it :cry:)

It looks like you won't be supporting Vilsack in 08. Make sure you take a look at my blog Iowa for Feingold at http://iowafeingold.blogspot.com before you get behind someone.

Even if Vilsack does run, I don't think other candidates will skip Iowa. Vilsack still might win, but he won't get anywhere near the 68% that Harkin got in 1992.

2. Harkin got 75% in the end in 1992
I saw how well Feingold did at the Wisconsin State Convention! 58%?

Seems that, even though he's not officially running for president, Wisconsinites want him to be president! :bounce:

As compared to:

"I think people see me as a governor. I'm not a declared candidate for president," Vilsack said in a Des Moines Register interview before leaving for New Hampshire. "I'm confident that if there comes a time when I decide that I'm running for president that I can go out and I can talk to the people of Iowa, and I think they will be receptive."

Whatever you say Mr. 10% :eyes:

Vilsack hits right note with N.H. Democrats

Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack met an important test wtih New Hampshire voters on his first trip as a potential presidential candidate to the state by pledging his support for keeping its primary election the nation's first.

"I sincerely hope that as the Democratic National Committee continues its deliberations about the process that it recognizes the unique responsibility that New Hampshire and Iowa have had for so long and preserve the ability of Iowa and New Hampshire to continue to do what they do so well which is to start the process," Vilsack said this morning.

While it is nearly assured that the Iowa caucuses will launch the 2008 Democratic nominating cycle, New Hampshire is locked in a bitter fight with the Democratic National Committee. A national party commission has recommended inserting one or two nominating contests between Iowa's caucuses and New Hampshire's traditional lead-off primary.

<snip>

He later elaborated on the primary controversy, which remains unsettled a year and a half before the expected launch of the 2008 nominating season.

Vilsack also defended Iowa members of the party's commission, who supported recommendations that one or two states be allowed to hold caucuses after Iowa but before New Hampshire.

"I'm not willing to say we voted against New Hampshire," Vilsack said after touring an organic yogurt plant in nearby Londonderry.

<snip>

WOW - that's a little different from what was said earlier in the day! :wow: I guess he's so damn smart and all those little New Hampshire people are so dumb they'll never figure out that HE SCREWED THEM! Saying he supports the 'First in the Nation Primary' and yet assisting in the inserting of two more 'Caucuses' inbetween Iowa and New Hampshire makes him think he can have his presidential piece of the pie and eat it too. Did I mention :puke:
