Any Manhattan-ites around DU?

I see many people from Lawrence, and KC, but haven't spotted anyone from Manhattan. I know there have to be plenty, but is anyone on DU from here?
My husband and I are always looking for sane people to hang out with!

We love this town! Hate the people, and the politics (which is going to be the case just about anywhere in KS) but the town is awesome. And just far enough from the parents to keep us sane.

and welcome to DU! I am in Topeka but am often in Manhattan since my oldest son is there at K State.

We did have a DUer named LittleApple but I have not seen her around for a long long time. I think she was moving.

The Manhattan area is beautiful. My son likes what he is doing but like you is not crazy about the people. He is a liberal as well (thank goodness) and my youngest is a DUer at school in KC although he rarely posts.

And we're both from Topeka. We need more liberals in this area, some of the mind sets of people around here is infuriating. But that's common for most of Kansas I guess. Tell your son if he's ever interested in meeting new people, to look us up! We don't do much socializing and have very few friends in town. But it's good to know we're not the only smart ones here!

student and that means he is either practicing or gigging or trying not to flunk out of the other classes he is taking. I don't get to see him nearly as often as I would like unless I go there to hear him play. I don't think he actually gets to socialize much, or perhaps I don't think that because I am his mother and that is what he wants me to think! ;)

So are you both young and recently out of high school or are you back in school after some time away?

We are young, got married when I was 20 and he was 18. That was just over 3 years ago. When you know, you just know! (And we knew)

Chris is a junior, hoping to graduate next December if he can handle two 15 hour semesters and at least 12 hours over the summer. If so, it's only because he wants to be done so badly!
I tried the college thing straight out of school, and it didn't suit me. I work in Junction City as a supervisor for a local bank. I love it and would only give it up to stay home with a little one if we ever have one (and can afford for Mommy to work part-time or less). Chris is jealous of me, I have the job (and opportunity to advance) that he hopes to have when he's out of school. He started out to major in business, but his GPA fell and now he's in Political Science; which suits him better and he actually is enjoying.
Tell your son to never give up, music is a wonderful thing and I'm sure he's a great musician!

I just figured it out. Someone was wondering why you would think Manhattan was a great town, well it is because you are from Topeka! I know I should not say that but since I was born and raised here I feel like I have the right to say it. Actually, I love it here and I love Kansas in spite of the problems we have.

Your husband must be my son's age. Did he go to high school in Topeka? Both of my boys graduated from Topeka High.

we love Manhattan BECAUSE of Topeka. We were both born and raised there, Chris went to Shawnee Heights and I was stuck at Washburn Rural. Class of 02 for him, 2000 for me.
All our family is in Topeka so we're back quite often. We hope to not end up there but there's a chance we will. It would be better there than anywhere in Texas though!

because my employer there watched me nearly die while promising me that any day he'd get around to getting the health insurance he'd agreed to when I started the job. Telling me that my chronic peritonitis was the flu, he took me to get a flu shot.

When I quit, he was more concerned with getting me to sign a non compete than if I would live another month, which I almost did not do.

I am now disabled, and the conditions that are now slowly killing me started there.

I'm so sorry to hear that you had a rough time here, and that things are getting worse. Whoever your employer was deserves to be shot in the head. I hope he someday realizes what he put you through and suffers accordingly for it.

I think that Manhattan democratic politics should be given more credit. The democratic county party and YD's are much more active here than the republican party. It's a great town and I love it!

Do you know about this group? http://www.kansasequalitycoalition.org/ One of the guys I worked with on the steering committee to form the group has been very active in Manhattan and he works at KState, he may even be a teacher but I am not sure. Anyway if you know anyone interested in the group send them our way. I think Manhattan is going to have a city ordinance to deal with soon.

I've heard for the last few years that the Riley County Dems and the YD's were pretty active and growing. I was going to recommend that cfield contact the local party.


Glad to see you posting here KSUJoelle and setting the record straight. Didn't Chris Biggs (who almost beat PhilL Kline) work in the Riley County DA's office?

fwiw, I've got relatives in Manhattan but I haven't seen or talked to them in years.

My wife may be going to KSU. I know Riley co votes for the GOP but it is better than my co in SWMO. Sounds like a neat town! It has a UU church. Closest one to us is 80 miles away. Can you tell me anything else about Manhattan?

politically at least. Of course, if you move, you will be that much farther away from Branson:)
