Another Republican scandal
Wire fraud defendant changes course

Taff associate pleads guilty

By ROBERT A. CRONKLETON

The Kansas City Star

John D. Myers, a co-defendant with former congressional candidate Adam Taff in a federal mortgage-fraud case, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of wire fraud.

Myers changed his plea to guilty at a hearing before U.S. District Judge John W. Lungstrum in Kansas City, Kan., during which Myers admitted he had agreed to sell a $1.2 million house in Lake Quivira to Taff.

Myers admitted that Taff withdrew $300,000 from his campaign committee accounts and purchased an official bank check payable to Myers and his wife. Myers admitted that he and Taff then met with a closing agent at a title company and represented the check as a down payment, even though they did not intend to make that down payment.

Taff, with Myers’ consent, then took the check back to the bank and deposited the funds back into his campaign accounts.

1. Isn't it Amazing
Isn't it amazing how oblivious or uncaring some Republicans are about obeying the law? This guy sounds like another Tom Delay.

2. He lost in the primary
The guy who beat him was campaigning with Jerry Falwell at a local mega church a month later. He also took money from a white supremicist group. Fortunately, he lost the election.

Yep we got some great morally upstanding Republicans here in Kansas.

3. This is great!
When I was still working out there, I saw Taff and his Lovely Family (tm) campaigning on a corner. I wanted to "accidentally" swerve so badly.

4. He wasn't nearly as bad as Kobach
Taff was a joke. Kobach was downright scary.

7. And yet more
Posting here because I'm not yet over the new user limit for creating a new topic.

Following a tip from Fire Phill Kline, I and a friend started poking around Phill Kline's finances, and found some interesting patterns.

While it's impossible to be certain without getting into the details of some corporate structures, it looks like Kline has violated campaign finance laws by taking contributions from a company and its subsidiaries.

Whether this was actually illegal or just looks that way depends on who controls the money in the company and its subsidiaries.

Either way, 9 apartment building management companies owned or operated by the same company all maxed out to Kline's 2002 campaign.

I've contacted some people in the press, but I'm not sure how to gauge interest. If other people start writing some letters to the editor, this might get some legs.
