Evil Idea, KS (Topeka area) DUers
That would be, what, me, Gilmore, Muse, Mabus, and Proud if she wants to drive....

Anyway, Brokeback Mountain should be opening
Nationally soon. I searched and it doesn't seem to be playing anywhere in the area yet...

This got me thinking:

We live in Kansas. This is a movie about "gay cowboys". Fred Phelps and his cultists live in Kansas.

Anyone want to go to the showing in Topeka (since that is likely where Phelps will show up) with me?

Lets get a group. It could be fun!

1. Yes.
Is there a schedule that lists where those miscreants will protest? If so, we should make it a point to go to that particular theater.

2. I would imagine its on their hate site
I can't access it from work, though. Firewall doesn't like it. Its too obscene. LOL.

Anyone who wants to find out when they'll show, though...

Because, I know they won't wanna miss this...

3. What do you think of protesting outside of a Ford dealership
before the movie with "Ford hates Fags" posters?

5. I'm worried that people will take me seriously
Its such a hateful message, I don't even want to be seen parodying it...

God hates Phelps, though, I like...

9. What kind of horses do they use in the movie?
Mustangs? Pintos?

 I guess I'm going overboard.

4. Looked at the site - not on their "love crusades" yet
and then had to take a shower (really, I did take a shower).

They don't list anything about the movie on their upcoming and misnamed "love crusades".

6. they call them "love crusades"????
When I saw you write that in quotes in the Subject field, I figured it was a sarcastic name you coined.

But that's what they literally call them?

Google it. You'll come up with links to their site or people laughing/cringing at their site. Here's an excerpt from one of the latter.

If you go to Rev. Phelps’ website, (redacted URL) and be prepared because it is positively vile, rife with hate and negativity and a twisted view of Scripture—you will see that the funeral of Sgt. 1st Class Obediah Kolath is on the schedule of his “Love Crusades” for the week of September 5. (LOVE Crusades? GIVE ME A BREAK!) Obie’s brother, John Kolath, has received a letter from Westboro Baptist advising him that Rev. Phelps and his followers intend to demonstrate at the funeral. (web address redacted by me, just because).
source:Fred Phelps, Anti-Christ, Strikes Again

It goes a long way to explaining the Phelps' Phamily concept of "love".

8. Sounds FABULOUS!
I have no idea and I do have doubts that that movie will ever be here. Do you know? I have looked at every source that I know of and it isn't there. We have not gotten Capote yet but do have Syriana. Go figure.

Lets do it! I can guarantee there will be a lot of people here who would join us.

Suck on it Freddy boy.

10. My buddy "Brian" is coming to town soon
He'll be here in Kansas for a couple of weeks to visit his family for Christmas. He'd love to go with us. Hopefully it will be here during the time he's around.

FYI, for those who don't know who "Brian" is, he is my buddy whose old boyfriend (an Iraqi vet) committed suicide on Veteran's Day.

14. How nice of you to say
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 04:53 PM by Mabus
and coming from you, as opposed to someone like Perry ;), it means a lot.

Brian knows his way around Topeka. He could probably tell you a thing or two about your city. We went to a couple of drag shows there when we were roommates.

Back in the day (sometime in the late 70's) I used to go to a gay bar in/near downtown Topeka with some of my friends. As you'll recall back then, there were 3.2 bars and then there were "21" clubs. While I'm not admitting to breaking any laws, like sneaking into "21" clubs when I was underage, I will say that there some gay-friendly venues that weren't as picky about checking ID's of their patrons especially when you showed up with regulars. It wasn't until my third or fourth trip that I realized the nice lady bartender had military and other tatoos, a five o'clock shadow and suspiciously hairy knuckles. Admittedly the first time I noticed that I was in habituating a gay bar was also the first time that I didn't show up with a few drinks already under my belt. :spank: Talk about not paying attention. Oh well, I think I was having too much fun with my friends to notice my surroundings. Besides, the drinks were good and the bartender had some interesting stories once we became acquainted. I wish I could remember his name.

16. There was a great gay bar downtown
but I can't remember the name. I used to go there now and again. I only know of one now but have never been there. I would love to spend some time talking to him.

Funny story.

but don't remember the club. I do remember they had to move fairly frequently because they would end up burning to the ground if they did not.

19. *If* I had been going to clubs when I was underage
that was the one I would probably would have gone to :eyes:. Actually I think it was one of The Lambdas that I went to, at least that's the name I always associate with it. It was in downtown Topeka near a movie theater. At least I remember the bright lights of a theater marquee. I do remember it had a large circular bar and the interior was a light blue. Like I said before I usually had a few under drinks (or something) under my belt before heading there. It was the place we went to after whatever party in the country we were at petered out or we were looking for my beau's brother. We used to hang out with his brother a lot and it was his brother's favorite hang out.

21. Sounds about right
There can't have been that many gay bars in downtown Topeka, right? But then, you know me, I was always chatting up the people in the backseat and not paying attention to where I was going. I do remember it wasn't far from I-70.

Sorry didn't see this thread till tonight. Sorry I missed all the fun.

Been hanging in GD. Man that place is getting scary. I have a stalker. And he's creepy.

And what do you mean, this is my scene? Gay bars? My scene? Just because I have been known to go to the St. Pat's Day parade with a group of gay guys and have a great time doesn't mean I hang in gay bars. sheesh At least, not since I turned 50.

Watch me invite you to join us this year.

It's now Family Friendly (tm) and no fun at all. Last year I stayed home for the first time in years and had my own parade.

I starts with Guinness for breakfast, playing traditional music. Then Guinness for lunch, then the Grand Boiling o' the Brisket and the Struggles of the Soda Bread. The music gets louder, The Parade is about to begin...
I need a Guinness.

Later in the evening, the combination of Guinness, corned beef and cabbage lend a percussive quality unique to Irish culture.
