Kansas board votes for ‘opt-in’ policy on sex ed
By DAVID KLEPPER
The Kansas City Star

The Kansas Board of Education voted 6-4 today to approve health curriculum standards calling for permission slips to be signed before children take part in sexual education.

The so-called "opt-in" policy will give parents more control over what their children learn about human sexuality, according to its supporters. Health educators opposed the move, saying it could lead to fewer students being educated about their own bodies.

1. CRAP! We fought that one
and had people there on the ground. I have not gotten any reports today about how it went. I will post if I do.

Hopefully we can turn this around when we vote those 6 off of the board. They have really screwed this state over.

2. If this is the worse new policy they implement

we should count our blessings.

I have gone over and over this one. I just can't see how it can be all that bad. EVERY school I have ever taught in gets parent permission before we do any sex ed. Now I realize I am teaching elementary kids and it might not be fair to compare my experiences to a larger secondary school. But as a parent, I want to know if my kid is getting sex ed. As a teacher, I want the parents to know we are teaching sex ed. That doesn't seem unreasonable to me. Also the vaxt majority of parents have said yes. Only a very few have ever refused.

Now if they start teaching abstinence only then I will loudly protest. But if this is, as it says, just a requirement for parental permission, I really don't have a big problem with it.
