KC Area April DU Meetup?
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 09:11 PM by evlbstrd
proud2Blib is tired from Camp Casey, so I'll ask:
What is the best day for everybody? We'd like to make it easier for everybody to attend.
The Flea Market will remain the Flea Market, and has the room for a large group.

Whaddya say, folks?

Edit: She brought back some geat bumper stickers!

I approve of this message.

1. No Thursdays or Tuesdays
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 10:20 PM by Mabus
If we do it during the week. This Sunday(4/23), a week from Friday (4/28) and a week from Saturday (4/29) are out (besides I think Proud is going somewhere that weekend). You know since basketball season ended I find I have a lot more free time.

This Sunday is Nancy Boyda's fundraiser and Saturday is the semi-regular bonfire out at the Hollow. All you all are invited to both these events. If you're interested let me know and I'll provide some maps, addresses and directions.

Is Mopaul playing anytime soon?

on edit: Saturday 4/29 is the day that the Democratic Party is out canvassing. This is part of Democratic Victory 2006. It still isn't too late to sign up. http://www.democrats.org/events.html hit the "find" icon and sign up if you can.

3. Most Fridays are good
Hubby teaches a class on Friday afternoon and then usually does at least one session of tutoring. He's usually done by 7.

11. You don't want to know where I've been
or what I've been doing. All I can tell you is that I'm almost able to move again. We've been doing a lot of work on and around the house. We should be able to start painting by summer and my backyard has more green things growing (I'm hoping it is the grass seed I put down) and a lot fewer rocks. About ten days ago I was working in the yard and messed myself up. I picked up a container full of compost (I moved my composting unit) and, with all the strength I could muster, I did something stupid. I lifted the bucket up too high and swung it too fast. The next thing I knew I heard something snap and felt a sharp pain in my neck. It hurt at the time but seemed to go away. It didn't really bother me until I stopped working that evening. That's when I realized I couldn't move my head from side to side. I pulled a muscle and I've had a lot of trouble sleeping ever. But enough of my complaining. Where the hell have you been?

16. I've been doing the same stuff.
Prepping and painting my house. I haven't done too much damage to myself yet. But there's still plenty of time for that. My neighbor has tons of fill dirt i can steal from, so then I can plant a garden and never sleep while guarding it from squirrels and bunnies.

19. The city took my compost last week
 I have a composter and some other composting containers. The other containers are where I keep the compost I've harvested from my composter. Sometimes it isn't very much so I've been putting it in an old five gallon buckets until I have enough to use. I'd been "saving up" the compost for when I did my plantings this year but now it is all gone. That was two 30 gallon trash buckets (marked compost) and three five gallon buckets of ready to use compost! There goes my raised bed this year!

What really pissed me off is that they took my good compost but didn't take my bag of sticks. The bag is still out in the alley way at the usual pick-up spot. They had to walk around the bag of sticks and past the composter to get to the containers to empty them! Not to mention that the stuff was marked and heavy.

They normally won't go that far out of their way, will they?
Next time, fill a 30 gallon can with poop. I'm sure we can get some volunteer help.

22. No they don't!
I had a pile of sticks from the storm last month that I cut in three foot lengths (just like the city says to do), bundled some of them (just like the city says to do), put some in regulation giant paper sacks (just like the city says to do) and they ignored them. I moved them closer to the alleyway and they were ignored for another week. Finally I moved them into the alleyway and they finally carted the stuff away. These are the same people who refused to take my garbage one week (last year) because it wasn't close enough to the alleyway. I don't get it. I really don't.

LOL, I should have kept the composting in its original spot. They never bothered it there. I moved it because of the dogs. I have to keep the German Shepherd tied up or she'll chase every bird, squirrel or sound. The only place I can put the tie-up post for her leash and give her maximum roam range (i.e., she can run around most of the yard, including sun/shade area) was too close to the compost pile. She kept knocking the containers over or getting her leash tangled up in them. Any place else will either let her bake in the sun or let her run out into the alley.

Oh well. I guess I'll start storing compost on the side of the house. I don't think they'll go after it there.

23. Tie the dog to the compost barrels.
That'll keep the city thieves away.

Funny, they won't follow through when you follow the rules, but let the paint peel on your house and they're all over you. And I only get 30 days to "correct" the condition. Man, I hate hate hate climbing ladders. I think I developed my fear of heights in the Navy, when I ate a lot of drugs and climbed the mast to the crow's nest. I was OK until it was time to climb down.

26. LOL - we're scraping too.
We got a notice in mid-November that we had until Dec. 31 to get the house painted. Great timing. Anyway we called and got an extension citing weather considerations. We convinced them that should probably wait until after the last frost/snowfall before doing things like removing the storm windows or spending the day standing on ladders scraping the house.

And I know it is silly but I had hoped to get the inside of the house - you know where I spend most of my day - fixed up first. For instance I'd really like to get a wall back around the shower instead of the creative plastic sheeting we have now. On the bright side, having the shower wall collapse like it did let us know about that pesky leak in the wall that was rotting the floor and the walls. Oh well, that can wait. Apparently we have to make the house look good. It doesn't matter that the inside wouldn't pass code on most stuff. When we talked to the city last week they said they just expected us to scrape off the flakes and repaint over the rest of it. They didn't think we'd actually scrape it down to the wood, recaulk, replace boards and do extra stuff like reglaze some of the windows so they won't fall out. I figured if we had to do it that it would be better to do it right. I guess we could have saved a lot of time and energy doing a half-assed job like everyone else. All I know it will be a long, long time before I move into another "fixer upper".

I'd rather be fixing the leaky roof or replacing parts of the front porch or getting the house rewired (so we can actually run the air conditioner, the computers and make coffee at the same time) or repairing the back porch that settled differently than the rest of the house to the point where it is becoming its own building rather than spend my time scraping the house to paint it. Call me silly but I thought it would be better to fix some of the (major) structural problems first and then paint the house rather than paint the house and then do repairs later.

And my reward for doing the job right the first time? They cart off my compost! Why, if I weren't so frigging tired after working all day I'd complain to someone in the city about their priorities.

30. Are you sure you don't live in my house?
I have my own personal zoning inspector. She calls me at work!
I was all ready to rehab my kitchen, where the counter top is rotten. But instead I had to pay over $300 in fines, and still paint in 30 days. Sorry, but you guys just took all of my paint money. Please, take my compost.
