"Save the Bees, Trash your cell phone"
Was the text of a homemade sign I saw this morning while I was taking the dogs for a walk. It was written on a piece of institutional green cardboard with crayon writing. It was posted on a telephone poll at the end of my block. I was transfixed on that sign. I looked up the block and saw other signs on the light poles here and there. At least now I understand what the kids were doing next door yesterday afternoon.

Yesterday afternoon I was pulling some weeds in the backyard and I noticed the kids sitting in a circle in the yard next door. I overheard bits and pieces of what they were saying. They were talking about Earth Day and what they could do to save the planet. They had computer printouts of articles and were discussing the environment. After about half an hour they put their hands in the middle of their circle and said "Save our Planet!" and then they disappeared around the corner and, presumably, into the house.

I love the kids in my neighborhood. These are kids that range from about five to about twelve years old and they are doing something! They are talking about our planet. They're aware enough to be concerned. They're networking. It gave me such hope for the future. I'm in tears right now. I'm so proud of them. I wish more adults were like these kids.

2. It's great that they're so involved. But I really don't think it's cell phones
killing the bees. The die-off is too recent and too abrupt.

4. They may be a contributing factor
There was a study from Germany that seemed to indicate that cell phones interfered with the bee's homing abilities.

fwiw, A little over ten years ago I was one of the few who seemed to have a cell phone. I got rid of mine in 2000. I had it primarily because I was living in Baldwin and everyone I wanted to call lived in Lawrence. If I used the land line I was charged long distance. If I used my cell phone, Lawrence was in my calling area and the calls were so much cheaper with it than the land line.

Today, it seems like everyone has one. And with most packages people get "free" minutes and they seem to want to use every single one of them. Last week when I was out running errands I must have counted more than 70 people using their cell phones. People use them while shopping, driving, walking their dogs, pulling weeds and standing in line. People seem to be addicted to their phones. One of the reasons I like to go out for walks or sit outside is so I don't have to answer the phone.
