Tornadoes Touch Down in Kansas, Illinois

Saturday, May 5, 2007; 2:17 AM

GREENSBURG, Kan. -- Tornadoes roared across parts of southwest
Kansas late Friday, injuring several people, smashing barns and
grain bins and pulling up trees.

The town of Greensburg took what the National Weather Service
called a direct hit. Telephone connections were knocked out, and
law enforcement in the town and surrounding Kiowa County could
not be reached.

Matt Gerard, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service
in Dodge City, said an off-duty Weather Service employee saw a
"huge wedge" tornado travel north across the countryside toward
Greensburg.

No fatalities were immediately reported, but law enforcement
officials told Wichita television station KSNW that several
people were injured and that officers were going door-to-door
in Greensburg looking for anyone trapped or injured.

Tornado Wallops Kansas Town; 1 Killed

Saturday May 5, 2007 11:46 AM

GREENSBURG, Kan. (AP) - Rescuers searched Saturday for people
believed to be trapped in a partially collapsed hospital after a
powerful tornado ripped through this southwest Kansas community.
At least one person was reported killed and dozens were injured.

The tornado struck Friday night, leaving a broad swath of
destruction in the Kiowa County town about 110 miles west of
Wichita. The storm front spawned tornadoes along a path
stretching northeast from Greensburg through central Kansas.

The injured were taken to hospitals as far away as Dodge City,
where the Western Plains Medical Complex confirmed one fatality.
The Pratt Regional Medical Center treated about 50 people, a
hospital spokeswoman said. Three patients were sent on to
Wichita's Wesley Medical Center, including two who were in
critical condition, she said.

Elsewhere on Friday, three small tornadoes touched down in rural
southwestern Illinois, but officials said there were no reports of
injury or damage. Two tornadoes struck in Oklahoma, damaging
some structures but injuring no one, officials said.

3. And they are gearing up again tonight
I'm up in the northeast part of the state and we're starting to get a storm rolling in. The bad weather is back in the central/south central area again tonight.
