There was a home invasion in my neighborhood the other night
The cops were out in force the other night in my neighborhood. I kept wondering what was going on so yesterday I checked the Journal-World's website and found this:

Several adults and children were threatened at gunpoint by two men who entered a residence Wednesday in the 1100 block of Pennsylvania Street and searched for possessions.

The home invasion, still under investigation by Lawrence police, occurred about 9:30 p.m.

According to Lawrence police Sgt. Damon Thomas, two men entered the house armed with at least one gun and possibly other weapons and ordered all the people inside to stay to the ground.

We originally found out about it when we left the house to go walk the dogs. As we stepped off the front porch I saw someone with a flashlight thrashing around in the bushes aligning our property. I yelled out, "Excuse me. Can I help you with something?" I wanted to let whoever was there know that they were being watched. Turns it out it was a cop. He asked us if we had been in all night (it was shortly after 10 when we left the house). We said yes. He asked us if we heard anything out of the ordinary in the past hour or so. We told him no. He thanked us and started to turn around when I asked him, "what's going on?" He turned back to me and said "we're looking for someone." Then he told us he would be looking around our backyard and took off.

We went ahead and got in the car to drive the dogs to the park. As we backed out of the driveway we noticed half a dozen police cars parked up and down the block. As we drove up the block toward the park we noticed there were cops with flashlights all over the neighborhood. They were going through bushes, looking in cars, checking out front porches, etc. Naturally we wondered what was going on. We figured that the one of couples up the street had gotten into it again. We've got several domestic disturbers who live up the block so it isn't unusual to see the cops in the neighborhood but we don't usually see them searching the neighborhood. We finally decided that someone had run and let it go at that.

Well, we get home and the cops are still all over the neighborhood. I half expected that they would knock on our door at some point and ask if they could search the house. They were here for several hours. It really put the dogs on edge. They kept hearing stuff going on in their yard and we wouldn't let them out to chase them off. They must have searched around our house several times. They'd check the front porch and fifteen minutes later another cop would check it.

I don't know, maybe it's just me but I kind of wish the cop I talked to had told us that men with guns were in the neighborhood.

1. Thanks for the Warning
I was planning to come visit you next Wednesday night. I'll be sure to stay out of the bushes.

4. I look forward to seeing you
I told the Admiral of your response (and your proposed precautionary measures) and he said, "Oh yeah, Big Unit's coming to visit." As always, I look forward to your visit. Shall I prepare dinner?

2. Give the admiral a key
so he doesn't have to do a home invasion when he wants to come inside.

6. Personally I think it was an ex-boyfriend
or at the very least it was someone they knew. The newspaper said the gun men went to a back room and started rummaging through some possessions and all they took were some cell phones. It just doesn't make sense to me. I don't believe it was a random act. Maybe it is just me but if I were going to storm into a house with a mask and guns it better be worth a big pay off. I would have staked out and gone after a better neighborhood or at least targeted a house that wasn't near a major roadway for an easier get away.

8. There you are!
Well, you should have gone to a better neighborhood.

fwiw, my vampire-like habits will have to continue for a while longer. I have actinic prurigo (hereditary polymorphous light eruption, a.k.a. "PMLE") and the antibiotics the doctor prescribed are increasing my sensitivity to the sun.
