Soldier disappeared after return from Iraq
Tuesday, April 5, 2005

Stanford, Ky., man vanished a year ago

Associated Press

STANFORD, Ky. -- An Army specialist who served with the 101st Airborne Division has not been seen nor heard from by family since February 2004, just months after he returned from duty in Iraq.

Army Spc. Levi Moddrelle, 21, returned to Stanford in 2003 after serving as a Chinook helicopter mechanic near Mosul at the height of combat in Iraq.

His mother, Susan Tileston of Stanford, said her son may have been so distressed by his experiences in combat around Mosul at the height of the war that he ran away from the Army to avoid the possibility of another tour in Iraq.

"All he would tell me was that he was fired on and that he had to fire back," Tileston said. "But he told some of his friends that he had had to shoot people. He just wasn't prepared for that psychologically. He didn't deal with it very well."

1. I met her at the 3-19 protest.
She is a very intense woman.

He went to an appointment with army doctors, and they didn't show. Shortly after that he disappeared.
