Iraq War Veteran Says He'll Challenge Anne Northup Next Year
http://www.wave3.com/Global/story.asp?S=4246257

(LOUISVILLE) -- A veteran of the Iraq war says he plans to run against Congresswoman Anne Northup in next year's election.

Andrew Horne said today he's getting in the Third District race partly because he's unhappy with President Bush's policy in Iraq. Horne says the country is less safe since the invasion of Iraq nearly three years ago.

The 44-year-old Horne is a lawyer in Louisville and is an officer in the Marine Reserves. He got back from a stint in Iraq this past spring.

Horne was a lifelong independent until becoming a Democrat a couple of weeks ago.

:woohoo:

2. So does anybody know much about him?
I don't know anything at all about him, except for the fact that if it comes down to him and Northup, he'd be my choice... and does anybody know anything about the other potential candidates? I know nothing about them either.

6. Anybody heard anything about John Yarmuth?
I've been hearing a bit the past week or so (on blogs and even once on WHAS11) that Yarmuth may be entering in to the race. I think most Louisville people on this board knows pretty much where he stands on the major political issues, so I think I can safely say that if he runs, I'd support him 100%... he is exactly the kind of person that I've wanted to see in an elected position ever since I began to even care about politics, and if he decides to run, will probably be the first politician that I could vote for without any reservations at ALL.

8. His most recent column in LEO...
To My Readers
Hot Coals by JOHN YARMUTH

To run or not to run. That is the question.

As you may have heard, I am considering a challenge to Anne Northup for the 3rd District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. It is not a tough decision, not the least ramification of which would be leaving this space.

Suffice to say that a seat in Congress is not a lifelong ambition. Nothing in my professional career has been as satisfying as addressing the issues of the day (and some eternal issues as well) with an audience of intellectually curious readers.

...

This process has been a difficult one, not only for me but also for the leadership of LEO. Ultimately, they concluded that I should address the question of my candidacy, even though we realize that it will be perceived by some as favoritism should I proceed with the race. (I am sure any other candidate’s response will be welcome.) They also have decided — and I agree with their decision — that this is the last column I should write until the filing deadline has passed. So until then, or maybe for longer, I will say goodbye.

(more at http://www.goerie.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060118/LEO02/60117052/-1/LEO)

I wonder what he'll decide... I'm personally hoping that he decides to get in to the race. Since the filing deadline is rapidly approaching, we should know very soon...

10. I know that he was the talking head for the other side, but I
miss John Ziegler. He was such a complete and total asshole and very entertaining.

6. KEN HERNDON SUPPORTS A PRIMARY AND YARMUTH IN THE
3rd CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (by Ken Herndon)

Call me a cult of one, but I believe that a spirited
Democratic Primary will, with the exception of the
money spent, help us in the fall. Mr. Yarmuth and Mr.
Horne are not far enough apart on the issues to create
a brutal, detrimental primary race. On the contrary,
an energetic airing out of Democratic values, all
aimed at Ann Northup will enable the eventual winner
to fine tune a campaign message before having to take
on Ann directly. And, since both candidates are
first-timers, they will get
experience and a win under their belt before heading
to the fall.

We will never be able to match the fundraising prowess
of Northup but we don't have to. She needs to
outspend her opponents to buy the race...it's what
she’s done for 10 years. Once the primary is over, we
need to dig a bit deeper and come together immediately
to take her out.

Ann is not an innocent bystander in the Washington
debacle as she likes us to think she is. She is
number 5 on the Tom Delay PAC money list. She
was one of the first in Congress to support George
Bush and has been his hand maiden ever since. She put
herself in the center ring of the circus she
helped create.

Our nominee's job will be to never let people forget
her fundamental dishonesty while articulating a way
out of the storm. Ours will be to do
whatever we can to help.

I'll be for John Yarmuth in the Primary, and I
will support the Democratic nominee with enthusiasm in
the fall.

Ron Weston and Perry Clark are about to begin what is
going to be a great year for Democrats at all levels
in 2006. We need to be ready to take advantage of the
larger forces that are moving in our direction.
