Rita Still has Many in Abbeville Homeless

Two weeks ago, Velta Babineaux's FEMA trailer finally arrived. Storm surge from Hurricane Rita flooded her home on Pine Street in Abbeville.

Almost every other home on the street flooded, including her daughter's next door. "My walls - my floor - I lost my furniture," Babineaux tells KATC. So did most of the neighborhood.

That neighborhood is still a mess, as you can see in the video. Pine street is on the south and east part of town, just south of HWY 14. The storm surge, combined with a levee break completely flooded the entire area. As bad as it is, we've got a lot to be thankful for.
Scalia and Chaney won't be coming down here for duck hunting this winter. The salt water took over the marsh and killed most of the plantlife. Most of the grass is dead and the ducks moved onto somewhere else.

....and hurricane season ends this week.

1. thanks Tony
Did anyone happen to see all those travel-trailers parked in Gueydan at the Duck Festival Building? Bunches of them, all about the same size, about the same color, many from the same company. They have been just sitting there for weeks and weeks. I was wondering if they are FEMA trailers for the folks of Vermilion Parish..if so, they need to get out of that fenced in lot and into people's yards or lots.

2. What? You're not out of the 700 club yet?
Hi Tony! How ya' doin? We've got a FEMA trailer staging area operating at the Acadiana Regional Airport, and they currently have around 400 trailers there waiting to be placed. Here's the problem we are running into over here: The trailers are being distributed by requested date, so all the trailers they are currently placing are going to people that are here due to being displaced from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina. We have gotten quite a few trailers on behalf of businesses that request them for their employees, but very few individuals have gotten theirs. FYI- I am telling everyone that needs a trailer to have their employers request trailers for them...they seem to get delivered much quicker.
