Woodcock's stand on abortion troubling (Sherry Huber OpEd)

The founding principle of the Republican Party was the expansion of individual freedom.

The party -- my party -- has a proud history of defending individual rights, from fighting to end slavery to working to secure equal protection and voting rights for African-Americans; from leading the way in achieving women's suffrage to helping create a federal family planning system.

This once-proud tradition is in jeopardy in this year's gubernatorial race.

In a June 6 primary debate, Chandler Woodcock made clear his intention to eliminate safeguards for women's reproductive health and safety, noting:
"I do not support abortion...my agenda would move Maine in that direction."
