Lobstermen tie up boats to leverage higher catch price

The tactic of striking was effective Downeast: After one day of a tie-up, area distributors raised the "boat price," the price at which they buy the fishermen's lobsters, by .25 cents per pound.

While the boat price of lobster is approximately the same as it was this time last year at approximately $3 to $4 per pound, the cost of bait and fuel are up between 20 and 30 percent, said Patrice McCarron, Tuesday. McCarron is the executive director of the Maine Lobstermen's Association.

how many of us mainers refuse to pay the bump price of lobsters. i'm talking about the rip off by weigh selection. when we all know the lobsterman gets the same price for a 2lb lobster as a 1lb lobster. I personally love to inform people at these markets and give them names of fisherman that will sell direct to them.
like the farmer the fisherman needs a fair return for his product! most of these jobs are seasonal,with no safety nets. they need to make a living in a short period of time,but many of them work up to 80 hours a week during the season.
